Fav non-standard cartridge

You can find 16 ga. at Walmart. Yes it is more expensive than 12 ga., but it's there.
I don't own any guns in calibers I can't find at work, and that is by design.
My favorite not carried by Walmart is .32-20, but I do not own any guns in that caliber.

I wouldn't know; I don't shop at walmart.

I didn’t want to say until i saw it in you guys’ comments: but if I had the money the two I’d buy are the Whelen and the 257 Roy. I’m not likely ever to own either (unless a screaming deal is offered!), but I/we can dream right?!

Why the interest in those? I don't know anything about em.

Don't bother to ask for .358 Norma Magnum ammo on your next visit to Wallyworld, I got their last two boxes View attachment 828734 View attachment 828735 View attachment 828736
The recoil on that rifle must be memorable ! My .358 Norma is a huge Hannibal built by A- Square on a modified 1917 action . It is like this this one and weighs 12 pounds + and still has a huge , but slow recoil ! It was and still is my long range Elk gun until I finish the .375 Weatherby I am working on. i shoot the 250 grain spitzers at very close to 3000 FPS from it's 27" barrel. .

I supposed the 8.15x46R right now. Easy to load accurately and it hasn't pissed me off so far.

My other oddballs include 7.35x51 Terni, 7.5x55 Swiss, 32-40, 8x50 Austrian, .22 K Hornet, and at some future date, 7.5x54 French. I designed my own 30/357 Magnum wildcat as a lark, but have yet to finish my project gun so it doesn't really count. I just sold off all of my .41 Colt loading gear in a fit of sanity.

The 257 Roy is the closest thing to a laser without going into actual laserbeams. It was Roy Weatherbys favorite cartridge.
There is something about a Whelen that just sounds right: made from the .30-06 but in a medium configuration.
I have never shot either rifle... this is simply me coveting what I have read about here and elsewhere..

Cool to hear about. This thread should have been what's your fav nonstandard and why. Then it's not just a bunch of numbers, 'x's and '/'s for someone unfamiliar like myself haha

7.5x54 French has never been in any of my Wallmarts.

I shoot what dribbles and drabs I run across at shows. Every time I find PPU brand from Serbia on line it has a Sold out banner on the ad someplace.

.38-40 for my original Winchester ‘73 is rare to find in local stores. When you do come across it, expect to ”shell” out $50-75 a box.

Welcome to the world of reloading!

Forgot my TC Contender barrels ! Yup also .25-20 , 32-20 and .22 WRF . All three of these "farm gun " calibers were extremely useful and popular 100 years ago up till WW2..and for good reason. They kill out of proportion to what they seem.

That is actually how I meant it to be. My bad I didn’t even follow my own idea

A friend down the street, he was here when they invented dirt, said the 25-20 is the best round ever. His ranch didn’t make a lot of money once upon a time and varmints went into the pot. I believe him. Beautiful old lever gun...

Mine would be my 1950 Winchester 94 in 32 win special and my 1892 in 44-40. While I don't shop at Wally Mart I'm betting they don't stock either.

8x57 mauser is nearly on that list, at least here in the US of A.
6x6.8 was once made by one company, does that count ?

My favorite non-standard rifle cartridge is my 308 Norma Magnum of course. But as I’ve explained before, that’s because of sentimental reason. It’s not because I think my 308 Norma Mag will do anything the 300 Win Mag I used to have wouldn’t do.

I guess my second place favorite is actually my wife’s Model 94, 32 Winchester Special. There’s some sentimentality involved there too though. I know that in reality, my wife’s 32 Special won’t do anything my own 30-30 Winchester won’t do, but I remember my dad (an “anything 32” guy) claiming, “32s just kill better.” Besides, I think having a 32 Special, instead of a regular old 30-30, makes my wife feel kind of “special.”

My .45-110 (2 7/8" case) Sharps no doubt qualifies as "non-standard" nowadays, but the fact is, it's not my favorite. I like the rifle real well...my wife ordered it for me for our 25th wedding anniversary, but I really don't care to shoot it all that much. It kicks hard, I'm always afraid I'm going to put a ding in it, and black powder is messy. I do love to build ammo for it though, so I guess that's a good thing.

458 SOCOM . You just can't find it sitting on the shelf at most places. If you have never shot a big bore AR, you just don't know the fun you are missing.
It’s on my build list, but after the vigorous pounding the taxman gave me this year it will be awhile before I pick up any new toys.

I have as many 257 Weatherby rifles as I have 270s, and I like the 270. If you want to reach across to the next hillside it’s the answer.

Africa is still just a dream, but if I ever make it before I croak, I'd love to pack along a 9.3X62 and/or a 404 Jeffery. They're both unpretentious African classics that would be lovely elk cartridges, as well. I own neither but covet both.
