Favored gun oil?

Several years ago, i was using petroleum based grease in my firearms where grease was called for. I found the carrier was evaporating over time and gumming up the gun. These are guns that do not get shot very often.

So, I have moved to synthetic grease from my local tractor store and it is performing well. From another thread, I have decided to change to Aeroshell 33 MS, another synthetic grease.

I have not seen similar issues with oil but figure I will move to a synthetic oil. Since i have Mobil One in the house, that will probably be my choice.

Up ti now, I have been using CLP or Hoppes gun oil and they have worked well for me. But, I have been using what I have had on hand.

The last few years has been eezox for everything, but have recently switched to Hornaday One Shot dry lube. It's really slick stuff.
I still use the eezox for cleaning though

I did the same thing with a new XDs but ultimately went back to CLP. not to say the one shot wasn't working, it worked just fine and the gun shot well, but I couldn't break myself from the habit of wanting to see some lubricant on the gun.

It just didn't seem right to run it so dry.

I have been using RemOil for a number of years now and have been pleased with the results.

Tri-flow. Very slippery, goes on thin, sets up thick so it stays put. I like the small bottle because it makes it easy to put a drop just where you want it.

I use SuperLube grease for most applications, with Shooters Choice red grease when a super sticky grease is required.

While many oils will work, avoid any "penetrating" oils such as Kroil, Liquid wrench, WD40, PB Blaster, etc. They have been known to penetrate primers over time/killing them and having your first round go "click" is never good. I use Break Free myself. I know it works well when after lubing a trigger with "other" oils, after a drop of Break Free my trigger pull drops by 1/2 a pound.:D

I've always used either Hoppes or Rem Oil because Wally World carries it for a couple bucks. It's readily available and I've never had an issue that could be attributed to the oil.

I like automatic transmission fluid.
Me too. Im actually not using it at the moment, but when i was ,I was struck by the fact that whenever the time came for me to check my gun and re oil it-their was always evidence that it was still present. Also, its easy to see since it's red. Or the one I used was.

Breakfree CLP for everywhere/all over cleaning and lubing. Needle oiler filled with Mobil 1 0W-20W synthetic for spot oiling areas I want really slick or a liberal application of same in the receiver and bolt for running in new ARs.

Another Mobil user here.

Full synthetic.

Of note- with the rise of E-Cigarette use, perfect "dropper" oil bottles are in almost every trash can you can find. Perfectly refillable, and in a size that will fit anywhere, with a leak proof screw-on top.

I bought a 10 pack of 3ml plastic bottles, screw on tops, to keep lube handy. Inside of pistol/vertical grips on rifles, different range bags or kits, wherever.

$8.99 shipped for 10 and no need to go dumpster diving.

Warp, what is it about CLP and RemOil that you dislike?

FWIW, I've always used RemOil, but have never been happy with it. I store my guns somewhere between wet and dry, and when pulling them out, they're always dry.

I want to switch to something else, just not sure what.

Time to buy some gun oil. I would like your thoughts on the newer generation of oils that would be your choice as a lubricant; NOT for corrosion resistance. Some of the newer synthetics, perhaps? What say you? Thanks...
Are you open to grease suggestions?

If not...I've heard the Mobil One is pretty good.

I'd like to discuss grease. I think it's pretty close-enough on topic to stay in this thread, no?

I've heard certain guns (or types of guns) ought to be greased, rather than oiled. Which guns (or types of guns) are these? And which types of grease do people use?

It's hard for me to elaborate on rumors you've heard. ;)

Grease is a very good rust protector. The problem is that it's more work to apply and a LOT more work to remove than oil. RIG grease is very well thought of if you decide to use grease.

LPS3
goes on like an oil and sets up as a thin grease. I once had a shotgun barrel I coated in LPS3 for storage. Unbeknownst to me, the corner of the garage it was in flooded. When I next checked the barrel it had sat in a soggy cardboard box for three months. Not speck of rust inside or out.

Again, Breakfree COLLECTOR is easy to apply, easy (or not necessary) to remove and very effective against rust.

3 in 1. Available almost anywhere, fairly cheap, and it comes in a convienient easy to use bottle.
