I have used a lot of 296/H110, but decided to look elsewhere after some poor ignition issues. I also was not real happy with warnings about reduced loads.

I tried IMR 4227 and did not like it.

I ended up with Shooters World Heavy Pistol (ball powder at the 2400 burn rate) for the fast end of magnum pistol and WC 680 (Milsurp version of 1680) for the slow end of magnum pistol. Both do what I want with no "finicky" behavior.

When I was shopping, 2400, AA9 & VV N110 cost more than I wanted to pay, Blue Dot and Lil gun had reputations I did not like, and 300MP had way too little load data.

If I was shopping now and could not get what I am using now, Ramshot Enforcer would be in the running.

Accurate #9 for my 2.75" 357 Rem Mag and H-110 for my 7.5" 44 Rem Mag. I haven't ran enough 300 MP to make a call on that powder.

My favorite magnum hand gun powder is W298/H110. I’ve loaded it extensively in 357 Magnum for IHMSA handgun silhouette. Also, it is my go to for 410-1/2 skeet load. I have used it in some 300 Blackout loads and 460 S&W Mag loads.

I have not loaded any full power 41 Mag or 44 Mag loads but W296 will be my choice.

I have not used 2400 pr IMR4227 since the early 1990’s (2400 was still a Hercules powder then). 2400 left too much unburned powder in the chambers and IMR4227 just did not produced the required velocity. Maybe things have changed in the last 20-25 years.

I probably should try some Accurate #9.

I use WW 296 for the 629 S&W
dedicated a deer hunting load to Joe a former deer hunting partner [he passed in 2006]
it was a classic load I call it ''Head Bangers'' loads[primers marked with red paint]
loaded 4 target 44 mag and 2 Head Bangers for Joe ,,he limp wristed the first 4 and #5 got him
split his forehead open threw his ball cap [he did know about the 2 hot loads]
and yes blood was running down from the front site cut.
dang he was gone too soon.

The only "magnums" I load for right now are. 357, 10mm, and 45colt.

I voted AA9, mainly because it works well in all three, but I like it best in 10mm. I like H110 in all three for higher power loads, but it won't load down well for low power 45colt.
Longshot wasn't on your list and I haven't tried 2400 or Lil Gun yet, so if I could only have one powder for all three, AA9 is it at the moment.

I selected W296/H110, because the question was 'favorite Magnum pistol powder.' In my mind, for full-house Magnum loads... you can't get any better. Yes, you pay for that.... with charge intolerance, having to use Magnum primers, boom and blast... but it delivers. I hardly use it. These days I rarely shoot full-house, jacketed bullets in pistol cartridges.

My real favorite 'almost Magnum' powder is IMR4227, followed by 2400. I call it 'almost Magnum' because it won't deliver the performance of W296/H110, but it's pretty darned close, and is easier to manage.

First... 2400. I tried 2400 many years ago, as Chuck mentions... back when it was Hercules... and I was not impressed with the accuracy I got with it, particularly in the .41. I used my one can and left it behind. Then, during the Obama Powder Shortage, I picked up 2 cans of IMR4227... because it was on the shelf. I hated it at first... it acted very much like 2400, with the added 'bonus' of being stinky and dirty... far more dirty than what everyone points to Unique for. I thought... "Gads! I've got 2 pounds of this garbage to get rid of, now???" I was due to drive to WY for a steel shoot, I decided to just load all that IMR4227 up in the .41MAG, shoot it out of my Marlin... and be done with it. I bumped the charge up to an even 20grn, and loaded up about 700 rounds. What I found was... once that case fills up and taps the bottom of the bullet, THEN it works well! I came away from the WY shoot very impressed. Not only did it work well in the Marlin, but I was making 6 for 6 shots at the steel at 500yds... with my 4" S&W! The dirtiness went away... completely in the Marlin, and very nearly so in the 4" Smith. Obviously, the key is case fill and bullet weight, with barrel length a distant 3rd.

ETA: As far as IMR4227 being 'dirty?' Not at full pressure. I shot all 700 of those rounds and more, over the weekend... no cleaning, no brushing, just hammer down, 10-4. No issues with a dirty action, no barrel fouling (and this with hard cast commercial bullets...) and no degradation of accuracy.

Circling back to 2400, friend of mine sold me 3 pounds after the WY trip. I gave it a go in the .41, again, working it up to as much case fill as I could. Like IMR4227, it performed better at nearly full case fill. The accuracy was better than I remembered, but it wasn't as good as IMR4227... so I made the choice to trade off my 2400 for some .45 bullets, and commit to IMR4227. In fact, I just bought another 8# of it last month. I also used 2400 for some reduced .45-70 loads, where it did very well... much better than Unique and other faster pistol powders. In the .45-70, I've moved 100% to IMR4198... so the 2400 was a moot point, anyway.

I played with charge weights... IMR4227 in the .41MAG... with QuickLoad. I understand, more now, how those slow pistol powders work. As case fill rises to 100%, the burn becomes more efficient, and more complete. With a starting load of 18.5grn IMR4227, the QL mark of '95% burnt' doesn't even show up in 20" of Marlin barrel, but once you go to 20grn, it shows 95% burn at about 16" (I'm going off memory, that may not be exact... but it's close.) I suspect 2400 is very similar, although I did not run the numbers. I suspect most load data for W296/H110 is up there, already... hence the inability to download the charge, making the burn unstable. I'm not a chemical engineer, but that's my spin on it.

I've not tried any of the other powders listed in the OP's survey... I haven't found any reason to. I do have a curiosity about AA#9 (...and AA#7) but not enough to go out and try to find a can. Same-same with 300MP (which has been described to me as 'quite blasty') and Lil'Gun. I went through one can of BlueDot, back in the Hercules days... and I was not impressed with it, either. I will admit... I didn't use it right; it needs the same treatment as 2400 and IMR4227... a full case and some pressure to work right. However, Alliant issued a blanket warning against using it in the .41MAG... and I don't normally flout very specific warnings from manufacturers.... so BlueDot is a no-go for me.

I've had good results in performance with Blue Dot but not necessarily 357 Magnum near max loads level.

But even so, I'd rather use W296/H110 for full power 357 Magnum loads.

Choose your ":poison" and load on.

While H110/W296 will generally give top velocities with great accuracy in magnum handgun calibers, it's not my favorite since I often am not seeking top velocities where that powder shines. Most of my loads are less intense, so I chose 2400 as my favorite due to its greater flexibility.

I like Accurate 4100 (Ramshot Enforcer) the best. It's slower than #9 and just a tick faster than 296/H110, burns very clean, can be loaded down more than 10%, and doesn't require a magnum primer. Very accurate in 41 and 44 magnums and heavy 45 Colt loads.

My real favorite 'almost Magnum' powder is IMR4227

I gotta agree with Charlie98 on both counts. In handgun caliber magnum carbines, I don't think you can get any more accurate than a full case of IMR4227. For regular Magnum loadings, while W296/H110 may have narrow parameters, it performs very well within those parameters. It's measures consistently, and produces great accuracy in my firearms. Lil' Gun does not find it's way into any of my revolver chambers anymore due to the heat it produces.

Well, I’m going to be an odd man out I guess. I picked IMR 4227. The reason why is because I started reloading during an ammo panic, and it was all I could get. It has consistently been the one powder that was readily available through the three shortages I’ve been through, so I’ve used a lot of it, and gained respect for its capabilities.

Don’t get me wrong, others will give more velocity, and others still will give more versatility, but like a hot SPAM sandwich on a cold winter night, it satisfies when the other delicacies are unavailable.

Has anyone tried CFE pistol for a magnum load? I just purchased a Henry 44 magnum and ammo is hard to come by here in Ohio. I have plenty of the cfe for my 45 and 9. Manuals show ld data and was going to try it before buying different powder. Your thoughts please.

I have and it's the very last choice of powders I'd choose again. Cany you make it go bang, yep.

I was following right along on this until I hit "SPAM" and my mind immediately jumped the rails and went to SPAM with mustard on top. Back to magnum pistol thinking I have a pound of 2400 I've been using in .357 in the blackhawk but due to wrist pain I've had to cease and desist. Now I have the henry lever in .357 I look forward to trying the 2400 again. I have the best part of a pound of lovex heavy pistol I'd like to try again as well.
Sorry no opinions as yet, later perhaps. As has been stated here before, growing old is the pits.
