Favorite Rifle...and WHY?

My Winchester model 88 lever action 308 cal. w/ 2 3/4 redfield scope
was the first gun that my father gave me for deer hunting about 40 years ago.

That's a tough one. I have several rifles that I really like, and "favorite" changes with application. My "go to" hunting is a Remington Model 7 in .308. I replaced the walnut stock with an H.S. Precision sporter, and mounted a Leupold compact 2-7X scope on it. I have more expensive and more accurate rifles in the safe, but it's still the one I reach for the most when heading to the deer woods.

Favorite "plinker" is a CZ452 American 16 (.22 LR). It has replaced the Remington 541T since I received my first suppressor. The Remington is far and away the classier rifle, and more accurate, too. But the suppressed CZ is the cat's meow.

My favorite rifle is my Remington 721 in 30-06. It was my grandfather's (bought it before Korea). It handles well and fits my frame. I like it.

Well I suppose the one I shoot the most, and that would be my Cooper M57 .22LR. Cheap (relatively since I don't shoot budget .22 ammo much anymore) to shoot, extremely accurate, handy, but solid enough to be a perfect under study for my 2nd favorite rifle, a Cooper M52 in .280AI.

Funny I bought the M57 in order to get in good training for the centerfire to be sharp for various hunting seasons without burning up the barrel on the .280AI too much. Now when I think of going shooting the Cooper .22 is the first thing I grab. I even hunt with it more, since you can shoot a hell of a lot more rabbits and squirrels than you can deer in most places.

My Marlin Model 99 .22 cal. 1959 semi auto with tubefeed and capicity of 18 + 1, and iron sights. Was handed down from my grandfather to me when I was a young boy, and it is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot.

Right away I knew my favorite is my Winchester Model 94 Classic. I love the octagonal barrel, scroll work and gold plating. A thing of beauty AND function.(although it has yet to be shot in Alaska, I'm too afraid to damage her from the moisture)

Favorite centerfire - Marlin 1894CSS. Very fun to plink with.

Favorite rimfire - Marlin 39A. The Skinner peep sight really took it to another level for me. The CSS wears a Skinner peep also.

Most classic rifle - Marlin 336. No explanation needed. Also my first centerfire, so it's a "favorite" that way too. Williams WGRS for this one.

Browning BL22. Smooth as glass, accurate, and handsome to boot.

I was going to say my Beeman R7, which shoots as well, or better, than anything I own, and gets more lead through it than anything I own.
But this is a firearms forum, after all.

And oh yeah... both belonged to my father.

Marlin 336 in .30-30 or Vz.58
Both fun, relatively easy to shoot and not too much kick. No scopes needed.

My favorite centerfire cartridge is the 6.5x55 Swede. It's too bad it's such a bastard of a size and not too many rifles are chambered for it.

i'd have to say mine is this 8mm guild rifle built on a color cased sr98 action with a full length ribbed barrel.
it just carries right, feels right, shoots good and has a class modern rifles are lacking.

I think my favorite rifle would be my Polish Underfolder AKMS imported by Century Arms.

I've always been fond of the AK platform, and the original underfolder design just tickles my funny button. I also love the dark varnished wood foregrip and plan on replacing the pistol grip with a varnished wood one to complete the look. It has very low recoil for an AK, which is always nice. The chrome lined barrel and parkerized finish doesn't hurt either.

I think my favorite rifle to shoot would be my Ruger 10/22. I absolutely love how inexpensive the ammo is, and how ridiculously customizable it is. I also love the steel lipped magazines and how smoothly they feed. Plinking in my back yard has never been easier than with my 10/22. It's great for starling hunting too!

Rem 721 30-06.
FILs gun that I put $400 into to make it shoot well enough... It now looks real nice and probably wouldn't be anyone else's choice...but it's mine.
Marlin 1894 44mag is a very close 2nd!

Which AR to choose???

My favorite AR at the moment. The bulk of my rifles are of the AR variety. This one is an 18 inch 6.8 SPCII, Bison barreled Mega billet upper with a Super bolt in a JP full mass carrier over a Smith and Wesson lower with a Jard trigger and an Ergo F93 stock. Red spring and H colt buffer.
Why? Heck, I dunno. Love the caliber, love AR's, and this one shoots 1/2" groups with 120 grain SST bullets at 2550 fps.

(forgot the why)
The "Why" is easy too ... very little muzzel rise, accurate even with cheap Silver Bear ammo ... which is what shot the McDonalds toys ... at 100 yards.

1964 Marlin 336 in 44 mag. It was made in dec. 1964
the same as me. I've hunted withit for 4 years now
and everything I've shot with it had dropped on the spot.
Total of 6 deer 2 woodchucks and 1 tree.
As I've gotten older and my eyes have gotten worse
The open sights work better for me than a scope.
Light, handy and puts a big period at the end of a sentence.

-It has to be my tang safety Ruger M77 in .257 Roberts. I wanted that cartridge since reading about it at age 12; at age 40 I found the rifle sitting on a LGS rack - new, ordered by a guy who never picked it up. It's been mine for 25 years, it shoots sub-moa, and the first time I took it hunting was my only trip to MT, where it did an antelope and a muley for me, one bullet each and both DRT. -Nice way to christen a new rifle. It has been my go-to hunting rifle ever since.

My Glenfield (marlin) Model 25. It was my grandfathers, his first firearm after he got back from WW2. Its cheap to shoot, I just put a mil dot scope on it and it will hold quarter sized groups at 100y all day.

My fathers Rem 742 .30-06. Its got less than 100 rounds down the tube. it will hit a dinner plate at 200yards.

It may not be top-tier, but my Rock River Arms LAR-6 Mid-Length A4 is my favorite rifle.
In 6.8spc caliber and 16" barrel, it is accurate and effective with trajectories mirroring that of both .223 and .308. It's wearing an Aimpoint CompC3 with 2moa dot.
I would use this rifle for hunting game up to and including Moose within a couple hundred yards. For defensive uses the round is much more powerful than .223 could ever hope to be.
I always shy'd away from the AR platform because of it's DI gas system, but after first-hand use, so far I'm sold. I have yet to take it out on any extended stints in the bush, but I'm thinking it will perform well.
Short, compact, accurate, and relatively light, and packing some serious firepower, I couldn't think of a better platform.

It would have to be my '99 in .300 Savage. Very smooth action, shoots very good and just right to carry all day. I could also take the .250 - 3000 with me, but this isn't like the .300 my Pop left me.
