federal primers

My interest in weapons is mostly survival oriented. How can I use a "light strike primer" to improve my firearms? Don't get me wrong. I get a lot of enjoyment out of reloading and shooting. I just don't see myself setting up wind meters down my line of fire so that I put a round 1/16" closer to perfect at 100 yds. Dropping one with every shot is the point isn't it?

depoloni, the dump procedure you described is exactly how I learned to deal with it. It works very well. I do believe that Federal primers are very much more sensitive than the competition and for people like me who have very light hammer falls on guns used only for competition they are an advantage. For people using stock springs in stock guns they offer no advantage I can see. I think Federal's attitude on this packaging is based solely on concerns of huge lawsuits from shippers. If a pallet were to detonate under certain circumstances it could be very very bad.

I love Federal primers. I cut the bottom from a 1/2 gal milk jug. The primer tray fits in it to allow dumping the primers with no spilling and the milk jug bottom makes pouring the primers into the primer tray very easy.

Moooose102, I have considered Federal uses the large tray to annoy Lee, I have said R. Lee in his book said he did not recommend Federal primers, he said he did not test Federal primers and he said they did not give him any Federal primers to test, so to give him something to complain about, they made their primer tray too large for his flip tray, interesting.

In the mean time I receive the Blue Book from Dillon, in my copies they have listed a flip that looks like it was designed for the Federal tray, for the most part it is used when filling primer tubes.

I like 'more powerful primers', if I am using a hand primer with a tray I use the large Dillon tray flip the primers first, then tilt the tray to concentrate the primers, then use another tray 'upside down' on top of the primers, then flip the flip tray over and transfer the primers, then place the hand primer tray over the 'upside' primers and flip again, I then place the cover on the flip tray before something goes wrong.

A template could be cut to cover the large Federal tray that would only allow 25 primers to fall out at a time, the template would need to be thin, something like the sleeve the tray comes in, then the tray could be removed and rotated 90 degree each time until the tray was empty, and if someone saved the sleeves additional templates could be made to allow more control of the number of primers transferred, the cutout should be square on the first one, after that the reloader can get creative, or do as I did, get the Dillon (large) flip tray.
