SO, I was in my local wally world and I ran across Federal Red Box. I have already poured over threads regarding Blue V. Red. But the bullets loaded in the red box were not the same as the blue box. The blue box ammo had just a small bit of lead exposed. The red box had an exposed tip like winchester white box. Does anyone know the difference between these two bullets? They were definitely different, not just the same ammo in a different colored box.

The Federal centerfire ammo in the blue box is the power-shok line versus the vital-shok in the red box. Vital-shok is the premium line that has the various "fancier name brand bullets" for the most part. Look at their website for the options for a particular caliber to see the differences.

From their website: http://www.federalpremium.com/ammunition_catalog/rifle.aspx

Understanding our rifle ammunition lines:

•V-Shok®: our varmint line includes some of the most explosive, fragmenting bullets available for prairie dogs, coyotes and other vermin—see our non-lead TNT® Green for the latest in technology.

•Vital-Shok®: for medium to large game. You'll find the best constructed bullets available for your trophy hunting needs, including the widest variety of non-lead, high-weight retention and copper bullets available.

•Cape-Shok®: designed for the world's largest and most dangerous game. When it's the difference between you or the elephant charging you--choose the toughest bullets on the planet. Includes Trophy Bonded® Bear Claw® and Trophy Bonded® Sledgehammer® Solid, Swift® A-Frame®, Barnes Banded Solid® and all-copper Barnes® Triple-Shock®.

• Gold Medal®: built for competition. It features Sierra® MatchKing bullets and some of the most accurate ammunition performance available.

• Power-Shok®: for the cost-conscious hunter. When your game is not trophy-caliber and you're looking for the best value for your dollar, shoot this capable ammunition.

• American Eagle®: Quality ammo loaded for pounding paper targets and getting performance that closely matches comparable Premium® loads for the ultimate in real-world practice.

Thanks for the quick reply. The thing is that both boxes were the same price. Both said Power Shok on them. But the bullets were different. And the color of the box was different.

Federal changed its Power Shok packaging from blue to red. I have found the 243 Power Shok to be quite accurate with good performance on game.

just skip the color of the box and the product lines and look at the bullet used in each cartridge. it will be listed on the edge of the box where you would open it... usually under a picture of an animal or target. then go out and buy some cheap 180grn winchester super-x.

I shot a box of the Blue out of my rifle when I was breaking it in. My new blue box just says "soft-point" instead of Hot-cor. I only got about 2.5 moa. But I have about 140 rounds through this rifle now. I can buy Fusions for $20 a box. At this point every dollar I can save helps. Going to shoot a few rounds tomorrow to set my zero and see how things go.

I will find out today if it is accurate enough out of my rifle. 1.5" will be good enough for me to deer hunt with it. I have 120 pieces of brass I can have my wife's grandpa reload for me. I just have to buy the dies and consumables. That brass is probably destined for 150 grain NBT.
