Between being sick and moving I haven't done knife work in over 6 months but things are better now and I completed my first one at the new shop behind our new house.

It's one I started before the move and then discarded. Here when I saw it I made some changes and I think it'll work great as a heavy duty camp or whatever knife - you could tear apart just about anything with it!

1/4" O1 tool steel - HT by me
5" blade, about 10" overall
Stabilized Spalted Maple handles
1/8" mosaic brass pins
1/4" brass lanyard tube

Hope you like it - I think it'll be a regular model in 1/4" or 3/16" ATS-34 or maybe D2. :)

Thanks! To make a knife you have to have a way to cut out the shape, then a way to grind it whether by files or grinder. Then you have to heat treat it, which is easy with 01. Then you do the finish grinding, get it looking good and fix the handles to it. Shape those down to where you want using anything - files, Dremel, 1"x30" grinder, sandpaper.

Here's a tutorial that I made my first knife from:

http://hossom.com/tutorial/jonesy/

Between that and the "The $50 Knife Shop" by Goddard you should be able to get going.

Now making a knife with a hacksaw and files didn't satisfy me much. I liked making the one but it's a lot of work. Nowadays I use a chop saw or metal bandsaw to cut it out, calipers to draw my blade lines and a real nice grinder to hollow grind it. Then I heat treat it if it's O1 or send it out if it's stainless. I've added a disc sander and belt sander and have 2 grinders - the Grizzly I started on and the much more expensive Bader BIII.

You can get O1 cheap at http://www.toolanddie.com

Get firebricks at http://refractory.elliscustomknifeworks.com/

Give it a try, and ask all the questions you want. :)

Man! That is beautiful- and all business! The only thing I'd want differently, is slighly more projection at the base of the blade, to protect against slipping on a stab. I'd say I like the look of this knife more than at least 95% of the fixed blades that I see. The handle reminds me of a Loveless, too- not a bad thing.

Thanks for sharing! Glad you're feeling better.

John

Good looking knife!!!
Makes me want to turn out a few AGAIN.
Good job on the hollow grind.
Good ole' Bob Loveless has certainly impacted the knife design world hasn't he??
Through an old friend I once got to examine a Loveless " Delaware Maid" knife stamped #4.
Quite an adventure but the knife is probably priceless today.
Zeke

Don , good to see you grinding again !!

Do yourself a favor bud and try some of that CPM154... you are gonna love it !

I like that one alot bud. Will have to venture out your way for a visit before summer heat sets in.

JTWjr,
Is someone in the U.S. producing 154CM again?
ATS34 is the same alloy BUT it is the Jap issue stuff.
It was good ole' Bob that bought this alloy to the attention of the knife making world.
Who do you trust heat treating 154 CM for you?
Zeke

Zeke, I must say that ol' Bob impacts or influences about everything I make. I only met him once and he didn't like what I showed him but he's the Man to me. A Delaware Maid is about priceless, and when Bob put a brand new Stag Drop Point Hunter in my hands to look at I felt a huge thrill. I can only imagine what an old one would be like to handle.

John, I know you like guards! I have a mill now to make them and everything but haven't used it much yet. One of these days you're going to see a guard on a knife from me! I see now if I buy wider steel I could probably integrate more of a guard into it. And thanks! :)

JTW, thanks man. I have very little stock and no 1/4" stock but I have Bos HT'd stuff from before the move. Hopefully I can finish and sell some and get some steel.

Brian, I have no idea yet as this one is a gift. As it sits now probably $175 and that'll go up some depending on how much more stainless is.

I really appreciate all the comments, epecially since my Bader grinder went out and I had to finish this with "other means". :) Grizzly grinder, 1"x30" HF grinder, Dremel and lots of sandpaper!

Valkman,
The "Delaware Maid" that I mentioned looked very much like a Kabar U.S.M.C. fighting knife , brass guard, stacked leather washer handle.
Apparently Bob gave this knife to my friends friend as a return for a favor.
Bob has certainly come a long way since knife#4.
I made about 200 knives and except for the occasional Bowie or Toothpick, I also followed Bob's designs.

I talk with Mike Lovett a lot, and he is authorized to make Bob's stuff. Most makers are not but like Dozier you can see the influence in many of their knives. I try hard not to copy anything but I started with Bob's book and video and love his stuff so much I can't help working some of it in.

A Loveless DPH is something I'll never own at $3500 but I did get one from Lovett and that's as close as I'll get! :D

Zeke , I ordered the 154CM from Admirral Steel last time I ordered it , but I dont like the way it finishes , I did try the new CPM154 ( different than 154CM) , that blade was ground 100% after heat treat ( I use Paul Bos , as does Don ) , and the CPM154 was a dream to grind and finish compared to S30v.

Don , you gotta try this CPM154 on your next order , Chuck Bybee carries it and you can get it from him in bar or shorter length.

The one time I called Crucible they wanted so much for it I've stuck to ATS-34 mostly. I have some 440C also but haven't used it yet. Is CPM-154 cheaper now?

I was really enjoying a new Griptilian; thanks for nothing. ;)

I really enjoy the profile--I had to take more than one look.

I think she might be out of the sheath making biz - I know she got tired of it. If that's the case I'll probably supply a Kydex sheath with my knives although they deserve leather.

Valkman,

That knife looks great. Your knives keep looking better and better.

Best.
