Feral Hog hunting

Texas currently is home to perhaps four million and beyond in uncountable numbers. Feral Hogs reside in at least forty states and are increasing in numbers wherever they've established their dastardly way of eating and survival. Michigan has cryed "PIG" since 2006, and asks every deer hunter to shoot any loose pig on sight. Now, Michigan allows wild pig shooting with merely a small-game hunting license. This "fear" goes far beyond the possibility of their speading "disease." Destruction to farmlands are the most serious threat due to their rooting decimating acres of farmland, and their propensity to eat natural deer food. Egg eating of upland game birds is also a vile habit of Feral Hogs, not to mention, but I will, eating of new-born fawns. The only great asset of Feral Hogs is that they are lean and delightful to bar-be-que. :banghead: cliffy

Is there a season on the small game license or is that year around?
I end up in Michigan at least twice a year.

Shoot 'em like any other pest animal, except these stink, don't taste that good without a freaking metric ton of barbecue sauce, and are a pain to clean.

I give away every one I shoot. Which is usually about 3 a week during deer season.

In PA they aren't controlled by the game commission so you can shoot as many as you want whenever you want.

here I have never seen one have heard there in the extreme southern portion of illinois but we can shoot them with what ever we want when ever we what however many we want.

My buddy just got back from hog hunting this weekend. I am looking forward to making a trip to go myself. As they are such pests, I am wondering if any farmers towards the middle of the state would like some help in exterminating them.

That sounds like a great idea Hank.You're a lot closer than cliffy if you are in SC.My county is one of only 6 in NC that regulate hogs,limit 2 per season.The other 94 counties don't consider them a game animal and its open season like the other guys describe in Texas,Pa and Illinois.

We shoot them on sight here on our lease. We have also just erected two hog traps to help decrease their population in the area. I'll eat a young hog, the remainder become coyote poo.

Small game license, open season, no limit except the day before deer gun season when no hunting is allowed at all for anything. Growing problem in my area with destroyed crops, wrecked fences, disease and a lot of people want to know who the idiot was that brought up a bunch of Russians and let them loose.

so they went to the Capitol to have the wild hogs takin off the endangered list,
Leave it to our Game commission to try and make a buck by selling special tags,

It's a matter of what the monsters eat. Pigs, like humans, are naturally omnivorous, and as they get older and they eat more and more meat they get nastier and nastier. Sows as well as boars.

I like wild hog better than any store bought pork I've tasted since I was growing up in the seventies. I live in an area loaded with them and harvesting 'em here is fairly easy. Set up a corn feeder and right before sunrise or sunset you'll get visitors. Preferably the later. Feral hogs move more at night when it's cooler. A .22 right behind the ear is sufficient and will give you enough time to cut their throat. If I'm deer hunting with a rifle or shotgun and come accross a hog I've prefer head shots as well. I gave up hog hunting with a bow, way too much work. Unless you hit the spine they'll just run under cover like nothing happened. Furthermore, unless it's a direct hit to the heart they'll most likely survive. Found many a broadheads embedded inside while dressing.

I have never been pig hunting, but will probably be going in a week or two. Where is the best shot placement. We are going to be trying to thin out an overpopulation, but don't want any to run after being shot. Will possibly be using several different guns, .41Magnum revolver, .357 rifle, AR, AK, etc. Is it always best to go for a head shot around the ear? I keep hearing people say not to try behind the shoulder.

Dont go behind the shoulder because you will end up chasing them a ways... here this may help.
