feral hogs to kill - bullet and rifle confusion

get a .454 or a .223 kel tek SU 16 i dont care what it is unless its a bear a .223 with a 30 round clip your going to take them down or just get a slug shotgun how far are you shooting?

If you're shooting a live animal, you don't want to expend 30rds. You can shoot an animal to pieces and have it laying there squalling and it'll stick with you. Even if that animal is a pest, you want the cleanest kill you can get. Place that .30-30 bullet right and it'll do the job.

I ain't impressed with KelTec either.

Texasred, I noticed you said you also have a 20guage shotgun. Between that and your .30-30, I'd say you're pretty well set. You don't need some ninja'd up something. Someone mentioned getting a red dot sight... if you have a one-piece scope base on the top of that Marlin 336, you can mount a red dot. However, I'm not sure a fixed 4X scope wouldn't do just as well. But like I said, those iron sights will do it to 100-125yds just fine if you can see 'em and hold steady. A scope won't improve the size of your groups on paper; it just gives you a bit better look at your target. Either way, that .30-30'll do the job and be a lot more dependable than the ninja rifles. The 20guage shotgun... put slugs or buckshot in it... preferably slugs for the hogs... and you can put 'em down with it too. But I have a feeling the .30-30 is gonna kick less than the shotgun with slugs.

Try an SKS or Saiga in 7.62x39.
+1

I have killed hundreds of pigs with my sks. Just don't use aftermarket mags stick to the ten rounder. The saiga is a great deal at $200. You can put a red dot on the saiga for night hunting. I love night hunting. It is cooler and I generally see more pigs.

Sounds like the perfect excuse to buy some type of 7.62 x 39mm AK.

I think that round is perfect for hog, and a good quality AK is accurate enough for your needs.

visiting Military gun supply in FT Worth or Cheap than dirt right down the road from em
You realize Fort Worth is ~3 hours from Austin, right? Not exactly close enough to just drop by to browse on a whim..."

Why not I do all the time and I'm commin outa Tucson AZ :D I've actually re-routed loads destined for La port or Austin Laredo etc... just so I can hit the Cabelas, sleep across the street at the Loves TS then next morning hit Cheaper than Dirt then Military gun supply :D do it at least once a month when I'm on the road sometimes I can't get in on my way out in which case I figure a load that will get me into ST Paul MN (stockmens truck stop is right next door to Sportsmans Guide warehouse and liquidation center) then I'll work my loads to get me down far enough south to get into the DFW area.....

My wife claims I only go on runs myself so I can go Milsurp shopping! Can ya believe she would think such a thing?? ;)

We run up to Prescott all the time just to browse J&G Sales on a whim all the time and its more than 3 hours from Tucson :D

Texasred, the reason I was recomending Military gun supply is cause if ya tell em what ya are wishing to do, they have ALOT of toys in stock to configure exactly what ya might need and do it cheap........ the guys workin behind the counter at the Cheaper than Dirt outlet store also have alot of possibles and the experience to help ya put the accesaries together to get what ya need...

The 30/30 will have slightly more recoil than a 7.62x39 semi auto as its a closed bolt but it should not be too bad or tamed with a recoil pad Recoil is totally a personal thing that varies from one shooter to the next, my 20 year old step daughter looks and is built like a 12 year old at 4'10" and 75 lbs but she'll blast away all day long with her Mosin Nagant M44 firein heavy ball which if ya read many threads here tends to bring grown men (I'm assuming they are) to their knees after 30 or 40 shots yet she is totally oblivious to any recoil, I'm also not very effected by recoil and frequently will spend a whole day burning up .50 BMG with no bruising or soreness......

Your best deffense against recoil to to properly pull the rifle into your shoulder, if ya can get in some target practice with the Marlin with a strap on recoil pad after ya see its not going to dislocate your shoulder then lose the pad it'll handle much smoother without the rubber pad hanging up on clothing etc... as ya go to shoulder the rifle, the lil Marlin336s are a great rifle..... if it just doesn't work for ya then go for either the SKS or an AK as a cheap second up they will have alot less recoil do to the function of the rifle cycling... and won't break the bank just to kill a few hogs

"7.62x39 for hogs"

I saw a video filmed in Bosnia during the 1990's. It showed a dead soldier being eaten by a hog. You can hear some men speaking a foreign language off camera, and then the sound of a AK bolt being ratcheted and a shot. The pig fell over right there, kicked a few times and died.

At a guess I'd say it was taken by a 7.62x39.

Do you want to buy a new rifle? If so, then an sks, or ak or other such would be fine and dandy. If you don't, then just get the old marlin out, and shoot it again. It's probably not as bad as you remember. Make sure you hold it tight into your shoulder. I always thought they were pretty soft shooting guns, myself.

If it still bothers you, call up the nearest trap/skeet range. Talk to their local guru. Ask him to recommend someone who knows stock fitting, and have the gun fit to you, and a good recoil pad installed. Most long guns in this country are built with a 180 lb, 5'10 man in mind. The stock may very well be too long for you. Too-long guns tend to beat you up worse in recoil to begin with. Without a pad, it's worse. All in all, it shouldn't cost more than $50-75 to have the fitting done, and pad installed. Heck of a lot cheaper than spending $500 to $1000 on a new rifle.

I used to shoot as a kid and into my 20s, lately... except for occasionally making certain the shotgun and .38 work, not much shooting except a .22 for fun. My dad died this year and my mom wants to stay on the farm and as they say in Texas, there are only 2 kinds of places, those with hogs and those that are gonna get hogs... My dad bagged a few and seemed to have chased them off but we got 'em again.

Welcome to THR Texasred. I'm not really that familiar with Texas hogs, but I have been told all about the damage that feral pigs do in Hawaii. They chew up vegetation and their wallowing pits attract mosquitoes. In some parts of HI their presence contaminates the water supply.

Filthy, destructive animals. Best of luck in thinning the herd.

$0.02

go to the gun shop and ask to see one of these:

http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_seven/model_seven_CDL_specs.asp

in .260 or .243.

unless you want a semi-auto (SKS or AR-15/10) the remington modle 7 is a compact light weight hunting rifle and in
.260 or .243 will take down hogs with mild recoil.
(be sure to use proper bullet weights, 140 grn in .260 or 100 grn in .243).

unless the hogs there are dumber than most, after the 1st shot the ones that are not hit will run making the 10-30 follow up shots from a semi-auto useless unless your hunting a bald clearing.

i will also say that if you can get use to the marlin 30-30 it will be a good choice, as would a SKS if you are comfortable lifting/toteing it.

a scope will make a good shot better a good 2x7 or 3x9 leupold would be good as would nikon.

have fun out doors!
