I am in the market for a field/hunting holster for a new Ruger Blackhawk 7.5” in .45 Colt (this model). I’ve poked around the googles, but thought I would ask for suggestions here.
My basic requirements are:
1) Leather
2) Active retention (strap, hammer thong, or even full flap - hiking protection more important than fast draw)
3) Can be worn crossdraw (I anticipate this is the only way I will carry this gun)
4) Does not need to account for an optic, as I have no plans of ever mounting a scope.
At first, I was leaning toward a simple Galco SAO holster (link), but I’ve read a number of reviews stating that the 7.5” Blackhawk muzzle sticks out of the bottom of the holster about 1/8” to 1/4”. This gives me concerns about crown damage in the field, so I am shying away from that.
In the past, I Simply Rugged has been my go-to for holsters. I have a number of Sourdough Pancakes from them for some other revolvers, but experience tells me that a pancake holster would not carry very comfortably with a barrel this long. Right now, I am leaning toward their Cattleman holster in a cross draw format.
Does anyone have any other recommendations? What’s your favorite field holster for a long-barreled revolver like this?
Thanks!
