I just got around to working on this 721 in 3006 made in 1953, it was very dirty and cruded up from sitting in a dusty breezeway that was open most of the year. thank god no major rust. the bore is in ex condition and the stock is in pretty good shape(very dry). after cleaning the bore and metal I cleaned the wood and put several coats of blo on it and mounted a older weaver 3x scope on it. when the weather opens up I,ll see how it shoots, if it shoots like my other 721-722,s it will be a good hunter.

Ok Im still learning how to reply on these sites and messed up with what happened above this,
So I wanted to say I like the older rifles that have nice wood on them. Good thing you found it to save it.
Blo on them helps to bring the wood back to life.

The 721 and 722 series of rifles are both very nice. I hope the wood comes back on that one for you. I am still trying to talk a buddy out of his 722 in 222 rem. Been at it 15 years, he may be weakening..

Glad you could save it. I have a soft spot for those old forgotten rifles that sit behind doors and in garages or closets for years. I am always on the lookout for old rimfires that can be rescued from such a terrible fate.

I just installed a Timney trigger in my 1950 vintage 721 in .30-06 this week. I had to inlet a considerable amount of wood, but I have a nice crisp 3 lb. trigger and the ability to open the bolt with the safety engaged. It is a keeper.

My son brought me a 721 in 30-06, that belonged to his father-in-law, who passed away several years ago. Along with the rifle, he brought a new Sig scope & mounts, and a Remington ADL factory synthetic stock. He asked me to put it together for him...a task that proved quite a chore, especially fitting the stock, due to the differences in the trigger/safety mechanism between the old and newer models!

I wouldn't have made the choices he did and it was a chore making the scope mounts work, but the rifle looks and shoots really great and the grandson who got it for Christmas really loves it. The best part is that it's a custom gift from three people he loved...his Dad and both grandfathers. Matt's Rifle.jpg

I had a 722 in 308 that took many deer that I foolishly sold. Last year I bought a real beauty in 244 Rem from the original owner that still sports a Balvar 8 mounted in an externally adjustable scope mount. Despite conventional wisdom, it shoots MOA groups with 100gr Pro Hunters with a max load of IMR 4350. I'll be hunting with this next deer season.

Op good to hear you could save it I love the 721/722 series I am thinking hard about getting one done up in 6.5 Creedmoor!

top is a early non tapped rear receiver ring 3006, second one is 308, third is a 257 Roberts, forth is a 222. I have a rear sight for the 222 and a friend has the rear sight for the Roberts, I just have to pick it up.

Nice guns...

I've always had a soft spot for 721 and 722's. My first bolt action center fire sporter was a 721 in 30/06. It has always been a great rifle and I still have it. Always shot exceptionally well too. My 1950, 722 in 222 is a real shooter also, as would be expected..... The 721/722 rifle and the 222Rem were both instrumental in the development of two great legacies, the 700 Remington line and the 222 remington family of cartridges. Out of the 222 remington were developed the 222 mag, the 223/5.56 and the 221 fireball...

Last year I bought a real beauty in 244 Rem from the original owner that still sports a Balvar 8 mounted in an externally adjustable scope mount.

Cool setup... I bought a 1955 winchester model 70 featherweight in 243 a couple years ago with the same scope and mount only I think it was a 6x. For an old style quick detach it works surprisingly well...

Call me another big fan of the 721-722 series. Most of the ones I've had were wonderfully accurate. They founded the 700's reputation for accuracy and will match or exceed anything made today. Attached are photos of a few of my favorite 722's: at top is a .257 Roberts, center is .222 Rem. Mag., bottom is .222 Rem B-Grade. Other photo is .222 Rem in what I call "full vintage dress" with vintage Lyman All-American 10X in Buehler mounts. DSC_0228.JPG DSC_0231.JPG

I have a 721 300 HH. And I love it!

That is a cool round to have a 721 chambered in... I have not run across that combination yet, have to snap it up if I did.. Hard enough for me not to want to buy all the more common 721/722'2 I see.

I sure do like that 222 B grade... and the 257 is always cool....

I have a Stith 3/4" scope mount for a 721 and am not sure I'll ever find a rifle to put it on. Does anyone have a 721 outfitted with a Stith? It seems almost too retro for a rifle of this era, but maybe not.

I have seen them on Remington 721,s and model 70 Winchester,s too, I think the same base-mount fits them both, with the rear going on where a receiver sight would have gone and the front going in the rear sight dove tail.

my rem 725 is a well used 3006 with a 2.5x old weaver

Nice 725.. the 725 is one of the 3 old Remingtons I'm still keeping an eye open for, the others being a model 30 and a model 713S .22.
