I lived in Ensley, (right down the road from The Brickyard, for our Birmingham residents) I watched a drug dealer smash a guy in the face with an aluminum baseball bat, and then toss him off a second floor apartment balcony. None of the other apartment dwellers noticed.
Dead bodies could lay in the projects for days, and nobody would call the police. When the police did come into the projects, they always did it in groups. Random potshots were taken at the cops on a pretty regular basis.
I could walk down the street, and lose track of the needles in the gutter. I was there working with a local church. Most of the girls were knocked up by the age of fourteen. There were a few holdouts until sixteen. As far as I was aware, none of the girls made it to full on married adult hood before having babies. And these were the "moral" people in the area.
I went to the wrong apartment, and interupted a drug deal once. I hid under a flight of stairs while the dealers looked for me. This was back before I carried a gun. It was pretty normal to see guys dressed in furs, pull up in Jaguars, and flash rolls of hundred dollar bills bigger than their fists. These are the people who's business you would be interupting. I had guns flashed towards me as a warning to move along, because my "whiteness" was interupting their business and making customers nervous.
I disabled the interior dome light of my car. See, when you would pull up to a bad area in the dark, and open the door, the light would come on, and the local thugs would see a white person in the vehicle. Since this was a surprise, you often times ended up with rounds coming your way. Friend of mine got nicked in the face because of that.
Two more friends of mine got shot in a car jacking in the same area. Husband floored it when the gun came in the window. Bad guy opened up. Husband was shot through the wrist. Wife in the finger. The car was a crappy Ford Escort.
You have no idea what you are talking about. The problems are complicated and confusing. I'm talking about four generations of welfare leaches, stoned out of their minds, illiterate, pregnant, and used as pawns by worthless politicians. Playing Wyatt Earp is the last thing that is going to make anything better. The only people who can clean up the innercity, are the people who live there, and until enough of them give a damn, then it isn't going to happen.
