Finally finished my retro build with the arrival of my NODAK SPUD lower this weekend. Every little detent, spring, etc is USGI Colt with the exception of the stripper lower, barrel, scope, and launcher. Spent just a little over what a low grade AR goes for.

NODAK did an AWESOME job with the lower. They match perfectly. Upper is a 1975+ M16A1 upper, so technically 3 prong hider is wrong, but I love the look and had to have it.

With all the retro builds, I wanted to change it up a bit with the M203.

Really happy with this lightweight AR. My tactical AR might be sitting in the safe allot more!

Very nice builds!

And thanks for the pics too. Looks like they were taken in someone's backyard in the 1960s ... Where's June Lockhart? ... :D

I got a good laugh at that! No problem for the pictures, I'm glad y'all enjoyed them! Such beautiful weather outside this weekend I couldn't help but take the collection out!

Have a few more I'll post up when I get the chance!

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Very cool! I still have the original triangular handguards that came with my '70s era Colt SP1 whenever I feel like going retro AR-15. And the Shorty AR-15 is my semi-auto tribute to the XM177E2. Even have a '70s era bayonet to go with it!

The rack number is a nice touch. Very nice.

I agree. I thought the same thing when I built mine. My entire upper is USGI, barrel and all, but my lower is commercial A2. I also have NOS furniture with no buttstock compartment. A bit of a historical nod to when the military felt M16s didn't need cleaning kits.

Very, very nice rifle! I may PM you with a few questions, if that's okay, as I have MINT slabside SP1 upper waiting to be built up, and I wanna do it right!

Really digging the carbine!

Very nice builds! Where did you pick up the USGI barrel? I had a source for a couple but they were quite pricey and I had already bottom a barrel for the build.

I used a solid stock as well. Simple and reliable.

Nice build OP, something different that m203 style. also have one of those 203 HG, always cool to see retro style AR rifles here. Sighted in my carbine this past weekend...not sure if it falls under retro but something I just put together

Mine, a pair of Colt SP1 guns.

The small round brass tag on the upper rifle looks to have been a rack number or ID number of sorts. That rifle was from a day my brother needed money. Never had the heart to sell it.

You guys are killing me.......Very nice build and SP1s. I have been seriously thinking about building an A1 clone.

The A1style rifle was never really on my radar til I was issued one as a patrol rifle. Balanced well and shot great. Then M193 ammo was very accurate out of the 1-12 barrel.

I have a full sized SP1 from '77 that I shoot every now and then. It's a really nice example of the original intentions for the gun. Huge difference between the handling speed of an SP1 and a modernized descendent with a heavier barrel, free float forend, red dot, light, etc.

Some people give me crap because I actually shoot mine. Are the original Colts really that collectible that I shouldn't be shooting it? I understand the historical context of it all, but to me it's just another $1200 rifle?

Thats the way ARs are supposed to look. I may have to go watch "Southern Comfort" again just to get a real AR fix.
