Im looking to do a "retro" AR build in the next six months or so to complement my Troy XM-177 clone.

This time around I would love to do a early M16A1 clone, '64-'67 variety with the three prong flash hider.

I was originally going to take a look at the Brownells Retro line but they seem to be as thin on the ground as most AR types these days.

At this point i figure my best bet is to start hunting for parts and assemble myself.

Has anyone done a similar project recently and have any advice to share? A good source for a parts list would very appreciated. I'm a total novice builder of ARs, although i have a few friends with the experience and needed tools who have offered to help.

I built a 9mm on a Brownells upper. I am very happy with it. I know they're hard to get, but Brownells does actually get stuff in stock, so sign up for emails. They sell "blem" retro parts fairly cheap often. I don't know anywhere else to get what your looking for, at least new, with the furnature.
Get an A2 rear aperature for the rear sight. The A1 that comes in the only parts kit I have ever found only has one aperture, just two of them on the flip. Same size, same height. The A2 is much more useful.

For the barrel, Faxon is probably the best bet.
Nodak Spud will have lots of what your looking for. I believe they are the supplier along with Faxon for most of the forgings Brownells sells.

A1 build makes the upper easier for being with a Forward Assist; you only need to source the correct shape FA.
As above Faxxon's pencil is probably the best host barrel--it's actually got better heat treatment than the originals

A person could make a case here for an 80% lower, as you could then engrave the left side to suit (also to mill down as much of the right side fences as desired.

An A1 is, slightly, simpler than a USAF "A nothing" build. That from needing a nearly fence-less lower and a no FA upper.
