Finally got around to making a shooting stool ... from a pile of junk!

I had an ex-coworker come up to the house this past Saturday with his wife and three kids to zero their rifles for hunting season. I've been dragging a wooden kitchen table chair back and forth from the house ever since I built the steel shooting bench shown below, which was about 6 years ago. This past Saturday morning I decided to put an end to that.

Last year an ex-worker dropped off some scrap steel at my house which he's done before. He typically gives me things that he considers to be junk and wants to be rid of, but does it in a way that makes it look like he's doing me a favor i.e. I now owe him a free firearms transfer or help with welding something for him. I think the pile of junk (shown below) that he gave me came off some farm truck or similar. I like repurposing things and have a "pack rat" approach to metal of all kinds so I guess I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. I'd been wondering what to do with the monstrosity that's been propped up against my garage for the past year and figured it had potential to be a shooting stool. If I were making a shooting stool from scratch I certainly wouldn't make it like this, so the challenge was making something functional with the least amount of cost, minimal effort and in an hour or less.

So here's the start, the in-between and the current status. I'm probably going to cut a couple of pieces of 3/4" plywood to the shape of the top plates, glue and screw them together and use lag bolts to attach them to the stool. I have some spare gun safe carpeted shelves as well as some old truck floor mats that are comfortable to sit on and allow for height adjustment. I haven't finished welding the stool since I wanted some feedback from my guests, but based on their comments I think it's good to go. The stool weighs about 50lb, is stable, is wide enough for two and quite comfortable. Maybe it deserves a coat of paint at some point.

I'm digging it, don't get much more stable than that!
Tho, now my curiosity is piqued as to what that was originally lol.

It definitely mounted to the frame of a pickup truck and was probably used as an attachment point for a snow plow blade. It was very poorly designed and manufactured, but then again I don't know the capabilities or equipment available to whomever made it. Years from now someone will look at the shooting stool and think "what idiot designed and made this?" without realizing that I was simply trying to make something functional from something dysfunctional. :D

Nice stool but my attention is drawn to the “inclosed” shooting bench. Is that area heated..........;) ?

The bench and stool are in one corner of a large garage that's not heated. However, I have three options in the winter including electric, propane or kerosene heaters so it can be nice and toasty on those very cold Montana winter days. :p

You never know, might end up as a coffee table some ones living room as a fine piece of "industrial" art!

Sounds like a wood stove would be cheaper in the long run - and some batt insulation on the walls

When I bought the house six years ago there was a wood burning stove in the garage in the corner where the bench sits, but the insurance company made me remove it because you can't have a wood burning stove in an area that's mostly unattended. I removed the mouse-infested insulation last year with plans to tear the whole crappy structure down and build something nice in its place. So much to do ... so little time!

Just need some foam, fabric, ply wood and a stapler to make a nice cushion. Needs a cup holder to.

I just found a couple of pieces of neoprene that would make for a nice surface to sit on. I'm not much of an upholsterer so it's not going to be pretty if I do it.

Nice job -- and a much better story than my simple shooting stool. It's a kitty litter bucket with a plywood cover and a piece of padded flooring on top. Doubles as a carryall for my shooting rest and bags.

 Are you trying to tell me that I need to add storage under the stool! What with @troy fairweather suggesting that I need a back rest it looks like this project isn't over yet. :D

I used the stool over the weekend when doing some shooting and found that it works better for me turned around the other way i.e. opposite of what I show above. I'm going to radius the two sharp corners a little too but overall it worked well.

@troy fairweather, it's much faster to adjust the height with boards but I had thought about adding bolts at each foot. I did that a few weeks back when I make a small computer desk for the gunroom.

Nicely done. Local public range has benches with a rear column like yours, with a seat that swings around the post and uses a big acme jack screw to adjust height of the round metal seat top. Something like that could be swung under the bench and out of the way, and adjust to accommodate shooters of different size. You have a good solution, but if you want something more elegant let me know and I will get you pictures.
