Been along time coming. I had been going out for a while now and never got lucky. My 2 best chances came when i wasnt even hunting for fox! Archery deer, i sent an arrow over a nice red fox and small game i skimmed one with a 22, and was unable to connect with a better shot.

Me and my buddy went out almost every weekend with our Lohman game call with squealing rabbits and only once called one in, but it hung up at the end of the gas well field about 50-60 yards out. It was a stretch, but my friend touched off two 3inch 20 gauge buckshot loads anyway, but we didnt get him. NO sign of the fox or signs of it being hit. It was a far crack shot but we were desperate to finally get one.

Since that day, and a few years later we got back into it. me and my brother this time, and we called one within 22 rifle range at night but it looked decievingly long range at night with the red lens on the spotlight so we didnt take the shot.

This year i was able to get out one good snowy morning with our new electronic digitial FoxPro call, and finally had success!

Within 5 minutes i see a red fox circling around our position about 35 yards out. I dropped it clean with a 3 1/2 inch #4 buckshot load thru my remington 870 turkey extra full choked shotgun.

Went out again a few more times but unsuccessful. Season closed about 2 weekends ago. Now its time for some northern mountain coyotes hopefully this march!

foxes are one of my favorites. usually im calling in coyotes when they come in. they are alot more cautious then most coyotes. i usually use a 22 hornet or .22 mag with solids if i can i dont destroy the pelt (that pesky 22-250 is hell on foxes u know).

good luck on ur next fox hunt.

ps: did u get him mounted/skinned or did u sell him off to the trader?

Living on a farm and raising chickens give you plenty of chances to shoot foxes (I have taken many over the years). I talked to a lot of folks who hunt them and coyotes serious and they say that they are very often drawn to roosters crowing among other sounds. The few times I have tried "hunting" them myself, I have taken a rooster out before dawn and hung a cage up in a tree and have had good success with bringing out varmits (including a couple of Bob Cats). Just about everything out there likes its chicken dinner.

pic added... i sold the fox to a fur trader for 12 bucks... it wasnt a big fox or the nicest of pelts but not bad

foxes seem abit rare around here now too, i havent seen many or know many who have caught any in traps or hunted them. Coyotes tho we do have a good share of, but they are very hard to hunt. PA coyotes are cautious animals and pretty cunning

i hope to take out some of the coyotes around my friends camp as well as were i hunt. They do damage the deer herd thats for sure.

I shot a doe a few years ago in a herd of about 15. As they went by i saw a coyote or two trailing them close. Couldnt get a shot. they run those deer tired
