I have had many many rifles and handguns. you know ,trying to keep up with the lastest and greatest of them all. I walked into our local gunshop about 3 weeks ago and fell in love with a Marlin 1894 lever action in 44 magnum. What a beautil rifle ,and so easy to carry, with 11 rounds of 44 mag in her. its an awesome gun, Seems like I never miss with this gun, even with factorie open sights, shot some pesky squirrels and 2 possums so far around the house. cant wait to take it out for deer. this is one gun I will never sell. by the way. I am new here seems like a great place with lots of good advice. my name is Dale and I live in central Pa.

Welcom to THR, theres lots of knowledge here and good people.

umm, was there anything left of the squirrels or possums.:D

Welcome to The High Road Dale, good choice on that marlin 44mag, I think you'll enjoy it. I love my marlin lever actions, very well made rifles.

Welcome and very nice rifle you picked. I have the same gun, but I put a Williams aperature - peep - sight on mine. It's amazing how much more accurate it seems.

I purchased one early last fall and it's my only hunting rifle that has the original sights ( except for mil-surps ). It just begs for a good reciever sight. When all the snow melts I'll probably go for a Williams Foolproof to make it more shootable. Essex

Those 1894 44s are a lot of fun. My dad and I each have one.

I had reached the conclusion that they were not capable of decent accuracy, but there must just be something wrong with the two we have. I've never been able to get better than about 6moa with either of them.

.

I've thought about putting together a good wheelgun + levergun combo
that shoot the same round. I like the 1894. Which would be the "better"
choice, .357 or .44 mag ?

They would both be range fun/deer guns.

one of my "have to have" guns is a Marlin lever action, and the 44 mag is phenomenally tempting, as it seems like the best of the rifle/pistol crossover worlds, but for some reason I crave a 45-70.dont ask me why, I'm a caliber whore, and I dont have one yet, but have a 44 mag redhawk,so...
anywho, geat choice, i've fired a friend's, and its great gun.I was amazed at the fun and (mostly) the accuracy of it, as well as the non-existant recoil.great choice. enjoy.

Welcome to THR. I have a Marlin 1894C in .357 Magnum, and it's a fine rifle, but in hindsight I think you're better probably off with the .44 Magnum. I bought the 1894C to compliment my Smith M60, and you might want to consider a Smith M629 to go along with your 1894. Even when loaded with .38Spls, mine will turn opossums inside-out, but if you're going after deer, I think the .44 is a better idea. :)

Congrats on your good taste.

Having had an 1894cs .357 mag. (miss it bad, pre-crossbolt), a Winchester '94 in .44 mag. (gone too) and a Marlin 1894S .44 mag., which I currently own, I was able to determine that, for myself anyway, the .44 mag. is the preferable revolver/long gun pair. I shoot .44 specials for mid-power fun and boomers with more juice than the .357 can hope to attain for when I'm feeling "testosteroney". (No, its not made by Chef Boyardee.):D I paired the Marlin with a S&W 629 Classic DX 6.5"'er and never get tired of either.

Handloading adds even more to the fun.
I've been loading 7.5 gr. of Unique over 300 grain Hornady XTP JHP's and the accuracy out of both guns is better than I can keep up with, which is a rarity for two guns. 'Course, I ain't Ed McGivern, neither.:D Fairly civilized in the recoil dept., too. OTOH, 24 grains of H110 over a 240 gr. XTP and you won't need to sniff the muzzle to see whether she went off or not. Not as accurate, though (for me, anyway.)

In a nutshell, IMHO, the aforementioned combo is about as fun and versatile as a pair can get. (Although I sure did love my 1894cs/Ruger Blackhawk .357 combo. Just wanted a higher power ceiling, that's all)

Once again, congrats on your choice of a wonderful piece and I hope you have as much fun with yours as mine have given me.

1894 marlin 44 mag

Thanks to all for your responses, I just love this gun and I can see alot of you do also. just for the heck of it I would like to know when my gun was made. maybe some one can help, this is a great forum. Stamped on my barrel is " Model 1894 Micro groove barrel Caliber 44 magnum " Serial # is 19034885. It has no checking on the stock or forearm , It is drilled and tapped for a scope , and has a hammer extension. The one thing that puzzles me is that when I look at Marlins website I cant find any with the smooth stock and forearm ( that is no checkering ) Like mine. any help would be Great. Thank you all. Dale

Thanks Loudmouth, I see now. I was also able to look up another marlin levergun that I have. It was given to me by my granfather. It is a 336 in 32 special. and made in 1957. My wife has been using it for Deer the last few years. It too, is a great gun, but not as much fun to shoot as my 1894 44.
