However, I didn't even notice it until I got back with it, but I noticed this scratch on the slide. Kinda pissed me off. I know I didn't do it.

Should I be worried about that scratch? Or is it a minor cosmetic flaw only?

Welp, I've been to various forums and ranges, and I asked all types of questions, fired lots of guns, but I decided on a gun I have never shot.

I pick up my brand new '05 Walther 9mm P99 AS (with the 15 rd mags) this Tuesday!

It's definitely a risk, but the main deciding factor for me was the grip. It's simply perfect in my hand. No gun even came close to the feeling of the Walther. I just wish I had one to try before I bought it. But from talking with other long-time Walther owners, I know I made a great decision for my first handgun purchase.

It really came down to the Springfield XD, the CZ P01, and the P99. I was able to fire many Glocks, the XD, several CZ 75 variants, some Ruger autoloaders, as well as a few Kimber 1911 framed handguns.

So anyway, instead of just using this thread as a pointless post, I was wondering what break-in process I should use for the first 300-500 rounds or so? What grained bullets do you suggest? I was assuming 115 grn FMJ's, as I plan to just target shoot most of the time.

I'm a noob on ammo unless it's .22 or .38 (my past usages.) What companies should I stay away from? What is a good, affordable brand of FMJ? I know this is a big can of worms, but I'd just like some general opinions. Don't suggest reloads, as I don't have the means to do so yet :)

Thanks guys! I can't wait to pick it up!

Good, affordable FMJ in 9mm is going to come from virtually any major known brand. My personal preference is Winchester White Box in 9mm. I'm not sure where you're located, but here in Texas, Academy sporting goods stores sell WWB for $4.89 a box everyday. If you can't find that kind of price where you are. CCI Blazer aluminum cased 9mm is also very affordable.

For a defensive load, Winchester Ranger T, Speer Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber, Hornady TAP and XTP, and nearly all of Federal's personal defense line are hard to beat.

Good luck! I cannot remember if the Walther is a polygonal rifling design, if it is remember to stay away from lead bullets! However, because FMJ in 9mm is so cheap there's really no reason to shoot lead anyways.

Enjoy and shoot safe!

i have a p99QA in .40sw, lovely pistol. It is my first "real" pistol, before I got the p99 I purchased a p22.

I use Winchester White Box from Walmart, good stuff. I use the WWB 9mm for my sig, and I have no problems w/ it at all.

The walther does not have the polygonal rifling.

Post some pics of your beauty, as the walther is a very beautiful designed pistol.

non-brass cased ammo & +P

New P99C owner here.

Are P99s OK with +P or +P+ ammo?

How about aluminum-case Blazer or steel-case Wolf ammo? Do these work well in the P99?

I read someplace the steel-case Wolf is coated with a lacquer that makes the gun a real mess to clean, so I may not want to run that stuff anyway. :uhoh:

No Wolf in a spiffy gun like that. It's fine in Maks and AK type weapons, but don't try to feed it through a nice gun like you've got. It's not that it's dirty, it's that it is not manufactured to the highest standards. IME, Wolf .45ACP is consistently oversized in OAL, and will trip the slide stop on my 1911 without fail. The case rims are funny in their geometry, and can tear up extractors on some guns. The last problem is that steel cases expand and then don't really contract all that well. Some guns simply won't extract the stuff.

I have had very good luck with WWB, Remington UMC, and Fiocchi has treated me well. Basically any of the name brand brass cased ammo should do fine. Blazer will be okay, but WWB is soooo cheap that it shouldn't matter.

As for shooting +P, I can't find a word about it in the manual. My guess is that since it's a European gun, it will do +P just fine, but I'll defer to somebody who knows more about it. Do remember that hotter ammo equals more wear, so I would advise against feeding anything a heavy diet of +P.

Oh, and pictures would be cool :)

I'm sure the occassional +p is ok, but +p will accelerate any gun's wear. Plus, the bore axis is already high with the P99. Shooting +p out of it would be a bear, in my opinion.

As far as break ina mmo - as said above, any commercial ammo is fine.

I have used Winchester White box for years, but I give up on it now. Last week - I had 2 under powered rounds. First time for that. Gun didn't feed right, and I could tell the difference on the recoil. I now use CCI Blazer exclusively. I don't reload, so the alumunim casings are good enough. And, it's the same price, or even a little cheaper (if bought at Academy sports)

I use 115gr,124, and 147gr fmj's when i'am
breaking in a new semi-auto.I'll put 500rds
thru it while mixing up the weights,if there
is no problems then i start testing my carry
load.

GREAT purchase decision! My P99QA in .40 was a real sleeper at the gun store. Never expected to like it until I held it - damn near perfect! Couldn't thank the dealer for putting me onto it enough...Great price, perfect reliability - after trying out all the others it fit me just right! I am glad to hear you liked it better then the XD 'cause that was one I passed on w/o much checking (came down between the QA and a Sig Pro).

No break-in necessary. The gun should function 100% right out of the box. I like WWB and Blazer brass from Walmart for target shooting; Federal HSt and Speer Gold Dots for carry. Enjoy!

We have all German P99s in both full size and compact variations. Both are 9mm. Neither has EVER malfunctioned at all with any ammo. This is shooting strong hand, weak hand, sideways, limp wristing, upside down and so on. I usually try to attempt to induce a malfunction with my semi autos, especially the tiny ones and I was never able to induce a malfunction with either of these.

Buy ammo, any ammo and shoot. Repeat. Ok, well buy reputable ammo. Some guys reloads out of a garage might not work all that well. I also will not shoot steel or aluminum cased ammo. Not sure if they would work or not. Other then that I have shot FMJ, HP, Lead, Flatnosed(EFMJ) etc. and neither has missed a beat.

Have on just like that, but in a .40.

Love it, and would never trust any other pistol. Works better than a glock in my opinion.
