Ever since the SGVGC closed, I've been trying to find a nice place to shoot long guns w/o it having to become an all day venture. I live basically where LA / OC & SB counties meet & there just doesn't seem to be anyplace than doesn't include a long wait before you can start shooting...
Suggestions??
Can you still go out into the desert & shoot legally?

I used to go off the 15 in Barstow. There is not a real shortage of land out there and plenty of small hills to use as backstops.

Is Burro Canyon to far? It has expanded to help with the influx from your range closing. :)

I've heard that on the wknds there is a regular 90 min to 2 hr wait to shoot at Burro :banghead: I haven't been to Lytle Creek in at least a decade, but that too will be a day's adventure but might be my only long gun option  Prado never 'remodeled' their long gun side :( Raahauges doesn't have rifle & to the best of my knowledge, there is nothing in OC that works either :(

San Bernidido National Forest

If you don't mind a drive you can go out to the national forest near Anza in Riverside co. You can get a map from BLM that shows the areas were shooting is allowed. PM me and I will send you the location that I frequent, a nice valley with hills on 3 sides to use as backstops. All you need is a $5 adventure pass and targets.

I hate that "adventure pass" stuff they have implemented in Southern California. Up in Northern California you don't have to pay to use YOUR OWN public lands, which is as it should be. In Nevada, all the more so. Someone should shoot down that $5 adventure pass stuff. HOwever, at least we still have these open areas where you can shoot. As far as I'm aware, the rules for shooting on public lands are the same through California, (okay in Nat'l Forest and BLM lands, must be 150 yds away from buildings, roads, campsites, campgrounds, or any occupied area) however some lands that see heavy use limit the shooting to hunting only, no target shooting.

Beetle Bailey and I go to Angeles Shooting Range almost every Sunday. We're gonna get a group together this Sunday that includes Black Majik as well. If you can make it, shoot me a PM, eh? ;)

I shoot Burro during the week so I don't know of the weekend crowds but they are enlarging the rifle area often so it is worth a try. They claim to be adding 16 new ranges. Lytle has improved the road that should help with time. If you haven't been to Lytle in a decade it has changed alot. I stopped going and haven't been in a couple of years, back when they changed the handgun rules to 25yds min. My son and I went for a few years on weekends and it was never full at the upper rifle range. Never had to wait get there early and you can pick your spot. They have expanded as well. At Burro membership might allow you to reserve a space. Give them a call. Inland Fish and Game has a 100 yrd range but I heard they were shut down last week so call and they are busy on weekends. :)

I can normally be found @ Angeles on Saturdays between 10:00am-1:00 pm. normally wear a Glock T & Cap. See you there.

Burro is plenty busy on the weekends, but like the other shooters here I go mostly during the week. Their membership deal is more than reasonable... borderline cheap really, for what you get, esp. use of the private ranges at no charge when they're available.

I hear Lytle Creek has seen a lot of change, but after several bad experiences there many years ago I haven't gone up to find out, and I don't intend to.

I haven't been out to prado in many years, but I believe they're handgun / shotgun only? Perhaps someone could verify that for ya.

FWIW, when I do go to BC on the weekends, I go after 2pm, and usually find the attendance tapering off dramatically and can score a private. Doesn't leave one much time to shoot (they start packing it in around 4:30 on summer hours) but it's better than a poke in the eye.

Almost forgot, Burro did have a fire about two weeks ago, so they are on being extra vigilant to remind shooters to leave anything steel jacketed / core at home. FYI.

burro canyon is the last place id go shooting too. Weekdays ok not that bad. But its just too dangerous. No range officers shoot almost anything no one cares. people shoot each others targets on purpose. i can go on for days. the absolute best shooting ranges are

angeles shooting range off the 210 by la crescenta and

the sillouette club. same place just next to each other.

i love bcr but there are a bunch of total idiots going to gun ranges these days.

if i were an RO i would clean that range up real good but i live too far away and honestly i dont have the time.

i would volunteer if i lived close by though.

ps:

there is nothing wrong with shooting wierd stuff as long as its safe and you clean up.

Burro Cyn

I like Burro Cyn and shoot there whenever I go back to SoCal. On wknds, get there early for the best spot!

I hate that "adventure pass" stuff they have implemented in Southern California. Up in Northern California you don't have to pay to use YOUR OWN public lands, which is as it should be. Actualy to clarify here is some county ordinances in addition to state law. While BLM and the state may have laws, local ordinances often restrict it even further. Rather than 150 yards for example, notice some are 300 yards. Always research your particular area in detail first. Also keep in mind they only like "professional" targets, not trash or refuse. This is kinda stupid as a metal knockdown/spinning target is little different from a plastic bottle or a cardboard box or various old items etc, but it is because people are more likely to leave trash out and less likely to leave items worth money out. So they restrict your targets to those still valuable that you will be inclined to take with you when you leave. So because of some who litter we are all punished. This will make sense to you though when you see public shooting areas unmonitored located outdoors. They tend to resemble small trash dumps, and make the shooting crowd look pretty irresponsible and inconsiderate. :banghead:

On BLM that is zoned as acceptable for shooting:
Riverside County - No shooting within 300 yards of roads, campgrounds or occupied dwellings. No shooting 1/2 hour after sunset or before sunrise.
San Bernardino County: - County has designated some areas for shotgun use only; other areas are closed to shooting except for legal hunting.
Kern and Inyo Counties: Open to shooting on BLM managed lands.
Imperial County: No shooting within 300 yards of roads or campgrounds. No shooting 1/2 hour after sunset or before sunrise.
San Diego County: Open to shooting on BLM managed lands. Possession or discharge of steel core armor piercing ammunition is illegal. No shooting in unincorporated areas.
Orange and Los Angeles Counties: Closed to all shooting on public (BLM) lands.

FWIW, I went up to BCR today, Friday, about 12:15.

Rifle range, 8-10 shooters, handgun range, 6-8 shooters. There were at least four of the Tac ranges were open, I nabbed one and burned off a couple hundred rounds of 9mm.

Can't speak for the weekends but it's wide open during the week.

We pretty much only shoot at Burro when we reserve the private ranges. The public side has always been loosey-goosey with range rules and safety. They've improved the range somewhat, pouring some concrete and building some shade finally, but the overall attitude towards safety is what really doesn't sell.

They do have a pretty killer BBQ guy, though. Those tri-tip sandwiches are to die for.

Angeles is much more organized, the facilities are far superior, and they're much more vigilant about range safety. (They actually used to be total jerks when you broke a rule, but they've mellowed some from what I've seen.)

Beetle and I actually debated where we'd go after SGVGC closed down, and after a couple months of deliberation, we ended up getting membership at ASR.

I am a member of both angeles and bcr.

I much prefer BCR because I grew up with it and to me it represents a slice of freedom - you can shoot what you want as long as it isn't trash, and isnt' steel (for now).

I really don't like angeles much even though the people are nice because they won't let me use my own targets - not even my $300 metalman 500 brinell targets. no wood frames, no pvc, no foam balls, nothing except what they rent you.
