My wife had a LGS order a 77/357 last week and I picked it up yesterday. Not a bargain price, but fair. The finish looks good and even. :)
About 5 or 6 years ago, I was really wanting a Marlin in 357. But they were hard to find around here. Then they stopped producing them for a bit. Then I read about the 77/357, and it got my interest. But I seemed to always find something else to spend my extra $ on.
Meanwhile, some reviews I had read about the Ruger's had me a bit leary. Like bolt needing polished or lapped to loosen it's action. Inaccuracy after the barrel gets a few rounds thought it. And so on.
But the bolt moves smoothly with no resistance. Accuracy, I can't say, because my eyes can't do what I need them to do anymore. So, I ordered a scope this morning.
I only shot at 25 yds. with 50 rds. of 158 gr. SWC. Most of the SWC (@ 1.610") feed without problems. It was when I moved the bolt forward too fast, that a cartridge would hang up.
I'm really looking forward to getting the scope mounted and seeing how the accuracy fairs.
All in all, I like the rifle and think a SP101 would look good with it. :)

they are great little rifles id like to find a 44 my self. the thing u here about rugers not shooting good are mostly rummers all the rugers i have owned and my dads to have shot very good they can be picky with the action screws tightness but get it right they will shoot. maybe polish with 1000 grit some on the feed ramp of the mag seems to help on the rugers with the mags. have fun with the rifle what is going to be its mane use.

Okay, thanks for the tips.
I have some RN and HPs to try out soon.
Mostly target. With a decent scope, I want to shoot out to 100 yds., which is my gun ranges max.

Love mine! I've taken a few deer with it, carried it for many miles. I've shot probably 200 round through mine and though it may shoot 2-3 MOA it is extremely consistent. The POI never shifts and the gun is drop-dead reliable. It's like carrying around a 22, but with H110 loads it's plenty powerful.

Congratulations on your new acquisition! I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the utility and accuracy of this fine weapon. As my eyes are also aging, I added a scope. Based on several online articles, I put a 1-4x32 Bushnell Banner on mine. The combination makes it a definite a keeper. Have fun and shoot safely!

While I like the iron sights, if my eyes were young again, they would be great. I found it hard to put the front into the V-rear sight and see the target clearly. That was at 25 yds.
I ordered a 3-9x40 Nikon. I'm hoping that will do for 50-100 yds.

If I ever run across a decent used one I’ll probably pick it up. Since I only have 8 other .357’s at this time, I definitely need one.
I kept looking here locally for one too. Last deer at season someone listed one on Armslist. They was asking new price. (No thanks!)

They make a great camp/trail carbine.

Mounted a very light weight Leupold VX-I 2-7x33mm Wide Duplex I picked up for a good price online.

Called RUGER C/S and requested a set of Medium height stainless rings (comes w/ High stainless rings).

They asked for my rifle serial #, and then sent me the rings gratis.

Fit the scope perfectly to the rifle.

If you want to really make her sweet, you can get an OEM RUGER 77/44 Walnut stock from Midway USA that is drop-in for the 77/357 as well.

They are beautiful, but would hate to take it in the field the way I do the OEM composite beater stock.

Shoot mainly Freedom Munitions 158 gr. truncated FMJ or Federal 158 gr. JSP.

That is the thing I hate about Ruger, why no wood on the 357. Guess too expensive....so if you want something that looks the part you need to shell out another $200. I bought a marlin lever 357.

I could take or leave it with wood stocks, myself.
The nostalgia of a lever action waned for me a some years ago as the idea of a bolt action in 357 caught my attention. The more I reasoned with myself about the pros and cons, the bolt action became my decision. I was kinda hoping they would reintroduce the blued version. But no biggie. :)

I really like them as well, and I guess with the plastic stock it will not weigh as much as wood.

I still really like the lever gun...and might end up that way. Also have a camp 9, and enjoy that but working the bolt is just fun like the lever....just different things...I still might do the ruger.

The summer prior to the 2016 presidential election I bought the 77-357 and a Henry Big Boy carbine in 357. I was fearful that if HRC was elected AR 15’s and most semi autos were in danger of being banned or confiscated, and there might be a run on bolt or lever action guns. So I was proactive, plus I always wanted one of each, so it was an easy rationalization. The 77-357 has a scope on it. There was some criticism in reviews about the scope making the bolt feel short, and I have found that to be true. Not a huge issue though. Both are a blast to shoot and accuracy is excellent.

I use a 77/44 for deer hunting, with a Nikon 3-9x40. Great rifle for the southern Indiana hill country. I put a Krylon and burlap camo finish on mine, and installed a volzquarten trigger intended for a 77/22. Also put some shims in the bolt: https://www.triggershims.com/ruger_m77.html It’s about a 2-3 MOA rifle with factory ammo, with me at the trigger. I’d love to see what someone with better eyesight could do. Good luck with yours!

I wanted one of the 357s and was on the verge of buying one. I scrimped, saved, and took on some side work to pay for it but when I went to buy one that was on the shelf it was gone and there were none available at the distributor either. I had full intention to ream it to Max.

Lol! Okay. I put a new scope on and bore sighted it today.

I think I will follow your suggestion about calling them for the scope rings. The stock rings barely give clearance for the bolt handle.

Then you probably will not be happy with the Medium height rings, as the OEM rings are the High ones.

The 90 deg. bolt is no friend to the bolt handle. With the mounted Leupold VX-I 2-7x33mm, mine just ticks the flip-up scope cover.

But I like the Medium height rings for the eye position.

Thank you for the clarification. The bolt handle only hits if I have the protective caps on the scope. Fortunately, the bolt action is very smooth.
I guess the next step is to get it out to the range.
