Finish peeled off a Huglu side by side by just looking at it wrong, hehe

The wife is petite so needed to shorten the butt stock and fit a recoil pad. Thought learning to diy would be a good skill set to have. So mounted a jig to a disc sander, taped up the stock, cut to size with new pad (14.5" to 13.4" with new pad) and peeled off some tape to final finish the said pad. Then some finish peeled off with the tape! What the heck; CZ-usa Huglu sharptail coach. Expected better. I peeled off the finish from the fore end too. Wood was sealed underneath so salvaged the thing with two coats of tinted spar varnish. Laughed/cried at the same time. Wife can use a mossberg bantam tactical 20 gauge so if the Huglu don't work out then its ok.

I think it looks better now anyway, must be a polymer based finish for it to flake off like that.
Polymer based, yes think so. My coats of spar varnish cut with BLO came off when I taped the stock for a second thinner pad. Was a 20 year old kick-eze that was in a my parts drawer, good for practice. Anyway, tried watco danish oil for the first time. Three coats in two days. Tape didn't pull off any finish. Finish was easy to apply and dries really fast. Need more time using the jig and sander.
