I have been working on these off and on, mostly off, for a couple of months now and decided to finish them up while being bored silly over the c-virus thing and being off my feed for awhile. I made these for a special person. Yeah, it's the same German gun as the last grip picture I posted as it was the easiest gun to grab and put them on.

Anyone care to make a guess as to the wood they are made from? No, I'm not making a set for whom ever guesses it. I AM thinking about doing one of the raffle things like another forum member did earlier. I need to stay busy.

Too late to guess,
Maple?

A little bit of thought suggests Pecan.

A little more research defenitly suggests Pecan.
Maple seems like a stupid guess, now. Lol

OK, I'll fess up this morning. No one came close. It's Siberian Elm, also know as piss elm because if you manage to get it to burn it that's the smell you get. It's a fairly common shade tree seen in this area and just about worthless for anything else plus it's an invasive species. It does have nice grain and that's why I decided to try to make a set of grips from it. It's lighter wood is fairly dense but the dark streaks are very soft. I had to build up a couple of places with superglue to smooth them out and the flaws disappear doing this. Due to the big difference in density between the grain it's hard to to sand smooth plus it's hard to see sanding marks until it's stained. These are stained with golden oak stain.

This is the wood I used for a fore end tip, grip cap and butt plate on the benchrest stock made from bamboo I posted earlier in this thread.
