What are the rules? No CWP Got an 18' Fiberglass canoe and I want to run it down some rivers and on some lakes. Is it the same as a motor vehicle?
" Not readily accessible "

Thanks for the help gents.

If you have a fishing license and you are legally able to own a firearm, you can open carry it while fishing, hunting, hiking, or camping in FL.

have your fishing license, fishing pole handy and open carry your firearm.

No CWL (license, not permit in FL) required if you meet above criteria

...as a guy who spends more time in small skiffs than he does on dry land (fishing guide, full time in the Everglades mostly) you might want to remember to keep your weapon tied down. Canoes are awfully quick to dump you and your gear... I have memories of outings in canoes in small rivers years ago, and pretty much losing all my gear the first time we rolled it... After that we were considerably more careful. The advice already given is valid...

I would suggest you open carry in a good retention holster on your hip. That way, if you upset, it will still be with you. Also, if you get out of the canoe, it will still be with you.

Totally legal in FL if you are fishing, going to and coming from. May (should) be loaded. An empty pistol is like a fire extinguisher with no fire retardant. Fishing license necessary if no CWP.

From a practical standpoint, it is a good idea to get the license, permit or whatever they call it even if you don't plan to carry concealed. This situation is a good example. If you are legal to carry concealed, it doesn't matter whether a boat is comparable to a car or whether the gun is readily accessible.

Keep in mind that politics are at play here.

In certain areas of Florida, LEO's do not like the concept of open carry, or carry without a CWP. In Broward and Miami-Dade, it was just easier to show them my permit instead, instead of trying to explain the law to them.
