Each time I purchase a firearm through my FFL, I fill out a Firearms Transaction Form and answer questions pertaining to my height, weight, et cetera. This information is phoned in during the NICS check, as I wait with my fingers crossed hoping everything is approved. We've all been there.

But what happens with a change in my personal data, such as a significant drop in weight or hair changing from brown to grey? (Hey, it happens!) I've lost quite a bit of weight since my last NICS check, and if I fill out the form accurately, will it "trigger" a denial because of my inconsistent answer?

I know I will never grow taller but I have lost 3 pounds from what my driver's license says. I have always placed the same weight since day 1 of filling up dozens of 4473 forms. I used to be nervous waiting behind the counter while the FFL makes the call and always feel elated when it goes through. But after about 40 guns, I stopped worrying.

In theory, and I'm sure in practice, NICS is required to destroy the transfer's record within a matter of days, maybe even within 24 hours. One exception to the rule are denied transfers which they keep around for a longer time.

If your weight changes, or your hair color changes, how would the FBI know the current information was different from the last time you acquired a firearm? That would mean they have a data base with all your personal information in it with which they can check data, and we all know THAT isn't the case, right? RIGHT?? :uhoh:

The Form 4473 doesn't have a field for "hair color".

Even if it did.......Federal law requires NICS to delete all information from that days transactions at the close of the NICS business day with the exception of Delayed and Denied transactions.

Five years for Denied transactions.

See? Not only has my hair color changed but my memory is failing as well! Thanks for the correction. It's my weight that has changed significantly---for the better!

I didn't know they were required to delete that information, so it is interesting to know, and I thank you for that.

If the transferee has, and uses a UPIN, which means they have a Voluntary Appeal File, it's probably a good idea to consider letting NICS know if something material in their VAF has changed.

For example, I felt it best to notify them my citizenship status changed; with Quicksilver speed I might add.

While the VAF does ask about Height, Weight, Eye and Hair color, I don't know I'd be too concerned about that. Citizenship, gender change, yeah, the big stuff only :)

My driver's license has said I weigh 185 pounds for years, though I haven't seen that number show up on a scales for likely 2/3rds of that time frame.
