I recently purchased a S&W 646 revolver, and experienced some misfires.

Searching THR and other forums, I found that this was a common problem, and the reason why the moonclips are manufactured in two different thicknesses.

My searching also found suggestions on purchasing an extended firing pint from C&S, which I did.

But my searching also found posting the the firing pin could be too long, and there's a risk of pierced primers.

So, how long should/could the firing pin be so I'd have the best balance of reliable ignition with minimal risk of pierced primers?

Should I be measuring the overall length of the firing pin, or just the length that protrudes into the gap behind the cylinder?

You measure PROTRUSION. The amount of firing pin that protrudes past the breech face.

As far as I know, there are no published specs for firing pin protrusion for S&W's that use clips.
