First Chicagoland town suspends handgun ban--Wilmette, IL

By fighting to keep the ban in Chicago alive, Daley is violating his oath of office: to uphold the Constitution of the US. Maybe he should be charged with that, also.

NBC5's Phil Rogers reported that Wilmette was not the only community with big decisions to make in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision. Six Chicago area communities: Wilmette, Winnetka, Evanston, Chicago, Oak Park and Morton Grove, have outright handgun bans, dating back to 1981, which are now apparently illegal.

Eight other communities: Highland Park, Deerfield, Northbrook, River Grove, Westmont, Forest Park, Elk Grove Village and Niles, ban the sale or transfer of handguns within their city limits.

On Friday, the Chicago Tribune called for the repeal of the Second Amendment. But barring that, Rogers reported, the Supreme Court's decision seems to leave little wiggle room for refinement of existing laws.

"It's going to be very challenging, I think, for municipalities to hold on to the overall ban on a handgun," Frenzer said.

As local communities tried to determine exactly how the ruling affected them, many activists made it clear that they were not prepared to take "no" for an answer.

Civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson declared that if the law means more gun stores, he would fight to have a say as to where they are located. Jackson also likened the fight against gun violence to the struggle for civil rights.

"We have legalized access to weapons of mass destruction," Jackson said. "We have become the most violent nation on earth. We make the most guns and we shoot them."

The fertilizer is really hitting the portable electric cooling apparatus for these folks! Sweet!

I was on a flight from Ireland to Chicago with Jessie Jackson. He alone was in 1st class and the rest of his entourage "wife included" was in the back in coach. I kelpt thinking of the joke about the pope, the president, the boyscout, and jessie jackson and only 3 parachutes :neener:

His wife had to sit in the back, while he sat in the front?

Lucky man.

Except this always was a right guaranteed by the Constitution. It's on the front page, read it sometime. :cuss:
"We have legalized access to weapons of mass destruction," Jackson said.
Really?????!!? Can I have my Serin Gas in a ten gallon container, please? It's easier to transport.

"We have become the most violent nation on earth.
Well....maybe.... I tend to consider places with actual genocides and kids blowing themselves up because of religious brainwashing to be a bit less desirable a vacation spot. But to each his own.

We make the most guns and we shoot them"
Better than someone else making the most guns and shooting them AT us, eh?

I think Jesse Jackson is correct. We are engaged in another civil rights struggle.

But in the other struggle for civil rights Jackson would have been on the side of the good--the side of the many decent, ordinary people who resisted the infringement of their rights by self-centered tyrants. Now he is one of those tyrants.

"Rev. Jesse Jackson declared that if the law means more gun stores, he would fight to have a say as to where they are located." When George Wallace, Bull Connor, or any other racist of the time made such a statement, the old Jesse Jackson recognized them for what they were. Today's Jesse Jackson has become one of them and thinks he's virtuous.

Jesse Jackson has no credibility, except with far-left "progressive" mentally ill folks.

...the Chicago Tribune called for the repeal of the Second Amendment.
I disagree with them, but at least they showing the integrity to admit that it'll take a Constitutional Amendment to change things, rather than simply pretending that the Second doesn't apply.

I have this vision that is making me smile of Sarah Brady stamping her little feet and holding her breath until she turns blue!

She, and Daley, are likely sputtering and snarling like impotent caged weasels.

If he had any sense, he'd locate one right between two crack houses...

Actually, that is not true. Go read the editorial here. The headline shouts “Repeal the Second Amendment,” but then goes on to excoriate Scalia and the majority for making a wrong call. They maintain that the decision is flawed, and that Stephens dissent had it right. They are enamored of Stevens' hilarious line accusing the majority being guilty of "a far more active judicial role in making vitally important national policy decisions than was envisioned at any time in the 18th, 19th, or 20th centuries.” (Remember that Stevens wrote the majority opinion in Kelo, which negated the personal property rights provisions of the Constitution.)

They then lament that repeal of the Second Amendment is unlikely, but wail that it should be done, because the Heller decision takes the issue “out of the hands of the people.” This editorial is a laugh-a-minute.

“The people of Washington no longer have the authority to decide that, as a matter of public safety, they will prohibit handgun possession within their borders.” Of course, they ignore the fact that nearly every poll shows Americans 2-1 against laws banning handguns.

So, before anybody gives kudos to the liberal media for being honest, better read beyond the headline. This op-ed is whiny, belligerent, bitter, and typical of a press that has moved far to the left and doesn't care to recognize it.

Jesse Jackson is the same as whites upset that "the colored" must be allowed into their schools and places of businesses.

When the handgun ban was instituted in Chicago, the African-America newspaper there, Chicago Defender, (and even other African-American newspapers, such as the Indianapolis Recorder) called it what it was-racism in action.

It is a horrific shame that Jesse Jackson does not acknowledge that gun control is aimed at the people he claims to fight for.

They may be relying on Chicago to fight for the bans. With a larger tax base, it has a higher legal budget.
These guys are realists. Daley does not care because a good chunk of legal fees paid out by the city of Chicago end up in some crony's back pocket.

"We have legalized access to weapons of mass destruction," Jackson said. "We have become the most violent nation on earth. We make the most guns and we shoot them."

First it can't be Jessuh, it doesn't rhyme. Here, Mongo can fix it...

"We have legalized access to weapons of mass destruction,"
and add

Which makes me open my mouth, I feel a compunction..

"We have become the most violent nation on earth."
and add

And blackmail made me what I'm worth..

"We make the most guns and we shoot them."

But all I need is words for companies when I loot them..

True. What has happened over the years, though, seems to be that promoters like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have become entrepreneurs whose business depends upon keeping their clientele in an inferior state.

We've breached the walls at Wilmette. Our armies are taking the fight to the enemy in several locations. More will fall as time goes on. There are those who say that Heller was not a big enough win. Maybe it wasn't a huge win. However, it is a win that has generated momentum for our side and demoralization on the other side. Jesse, instead of telling us that we have no right keep and bear arms, has now shifted his focus to trying to have a say where gun shops are located. He skipped right over the part where the city of Chicago and it's offspring suberbs would try to shut down existing gun shops and keep other gun shops from opening. They now are talking about having a say in where gun shops can be located. Jesse the gas bag, realizes he has lost a lot of gas. He can smell it. Like they say, "may the wind at your back never be your own".

This may be off-thread, but...

I was watching a "Town Hall" meeting televised from Seattle the other day. A liberal professor/moderator was fawning over several members of the Black Panther Party who were discussing the history of that movement. One of them is now a well-entrenched politician (county councilman).

They spoke fondly of the movement to arm themselves and "kill the pig" (their words). Interestingly, gun control measures in Seattle came into being shortly after the Black Panthers began parading - legally - with rifles and shotguns.

They used the power of the Second Amendment then to make a stand against what they considered to be government-sponsored tyranny.

I couldn't help but wonder what all those leftist types think now about gun control - now that the use of firearms doesn't suit their current purposes.

California's current restrictions on open carry were specifically passed in response to the Black Panthers.

Before the late '60s, California was much like Arizona is today -- actually, a tad less restrictive.

The Black Panthers walked into the chambers of the State Legislature with loaded rifles. They were cited -- for a Fish and Game code violation, because they had rounds chambered on a public way. That's all they could get them for.

Very soon afterward, California banned open carry, effectively anywhere but in the wilderness.
