I purchased my first M1 today at the CMP North Store. The significance of the purchase did not sink in until later at my hotel when I was disassembling and assembling the weapon. The rifle was a SA Field Grade SN 187XXXX (August '43). My son switched to the History Channel where they were showing "Band of Brothers". Sitting there with the pieces of rifle in front of me it sunk in that these were pieces of the same weapon carried by the men of Easy Company 65 years ago. I was looking for a piece of history (and hopefully a shooter to enjoy at the range) when I came here, and I sure found it. I have to admit to feeling a little misty, not to mention unworthy, as I held the pieces and watched the images of "the greatest generation" fighting for our freedom. My service was during a relatively peaceful era for our country ('75 to 90). I stand in awe of those who have served or are serving in combat. I know that each time I feel the recoil of this "greatest Battle implement ever devised", I'll be thinking of those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Thanks for letting me share.

your recognition, admiration, and respect not only make you worthy, but a perfect carrier of that rifle.

i have two service grade springers from the south store. 1 is a 1944, and the other a 56.

You guys should have seen the smile on my fathers face when I told/showed him my first garand a couple years ago. He was in the service during the korean war. It brought back many memories for him and the stories were great to listen to.

I know what you mean. Here are mine. All of them are special to me.
Two are Springers, One HRA, and one Winchester. Still looking for an IHC I can afford.

Great post for the Memorial Day celebration honoring our heroes. I just recently bought a Garand also, although mine has been rebuilt (new barrel, wood, etc) and it is not specifically "correct" with all SA parts for its SA receiver. But, when I hold it and work the action, I too immediately think of those who carried it into battle in defense of our freedoms but also to secure the freedoms of others who depend on the U.S.

To me the Garand and the 1911 .45ACP are perhaps the greatests icons of WWII. And what truly amazes me is the fact that they still are hard to beat for their purpose.

"My country tis of Thee. Sweet land of liberty. Of Thee I sing. Long may our land be bright with freedom's holy light. Protect us by Thy might. Great God our King."

Kevin-
Your post clearly shows that you are not "unworthy." You're a carrier of the flame, and you've probably passed it on to your son.

Well done!

Received my first CMP M1 about a month ago (HRA Service Grade), and it was in such good condition I just ordered two more. :)

I still need to get an M1 of some flavor. This thread makes me very jealous.

RP88: When you're ready, the Civilian Marksmanship Program is the way to go. If you're within a days drive from either of the two stores, I strongly recommend going there to pick one out. Probably not any cheaper that way versus buying on Gunbroker, but Road Trips are always fun!

the bad thing is that I'm about 11 hours away from both stores. If I wasn't so far away, I'd probably do it. I also wonder how my parentals would react if on Friday night I said "I'm driving all the way to Anniston Alabama to buy another gun that would otherwise take six months to ship. I'll be back hopefully sometime Sunday."

I may just have to join the garand collector's association, get a copy of my local range safety card, send it all in, and wait. It'll at least be cheaper that way...

or just drop the money on a very, very, very nice SA re-build or an AO carbine from Atlantic, AIM, or gunbroker.

Congrats on a neat gun. I feel the same way about the Garand I recently purchased.

Just picked up my first Garand a few weeks ago, so I thought I'd use an existing thread to share.

Now if I could just get ammo for it (I'm not a CMP member)...

it's really easy to get in. You could do it in a couple of minutes, probably (which voids any excuse I have for not getting into it).

You can join an online club like Garand Collectors and have them send you into the CMP database. Then, you can send in with that your CCW, your CCW class certificate of completion, shooting range/club membership, IDPA roster, etc. anything that shows that you have fired a gun in your life to satisfy the other part of the requirements. Then voila, after the paperwork gets filled and filed, you're in.

And that is a really nice Garand. Who is that from, and how much did that go for?

RP88, your posts show that you have an excellent understanding of how easy it is to qualify for a purchase from the CMP. It sounds like it's the waiting versus the 11 hour drive that's the hang up.

So I say, send your order in. Start the Wait. The Wait is part of the mystique. The Wait is a Rite of Passage. The Wait is your admission to the Club.
Go for it! Now! Gather ye rosebuds while ye may!

We'll be watching for you to post pictures, a few short months from now.
