Good Day to Y'all,

I was purusing a local military surplus store yesterday and the proprietor tried to sell me what appeared to be a larger version of the Timberline Aviator.

http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=tm94021

Anyway, the blade was black coated, about 5"-6"s long, chisel ground and had a tanto point just like in the link above. Handle material and design looks identical to that given in the link above. The words, Timberline, Emerson designed and Specwar were printed in gold or yellow on the blade. The store price was $368 and the owner said that it was a discontinued piece.

So here's what I want to ask....

1) Any experiences with this knife? Is it a good survival/combat knife?
2) What is the blade steel? It's not printed on the blade.
3) Am I being overcharged?
4) Is it true that this knife was once issued to Navy Seals/special forces?

Discount all claims of any knife being "issued" to any Special Operations organization. This includes the Timberline Specwar. Individual units have the ability to buy (heck, I've even sold knives to a Coast Guard cutter for their divers) knives, but if an item doesn't have a U.S. military inventory number it isn't issue.

All that said. The Specwar is a heck of a tough knife and will take tons of abuse.

It is discontinued.

$368 is a large chunk of change for a SpecWar.

I bought a TImberline Aviator Titanium fir $69 at a clearance sale. The larger SpecWar at $368 is a rip off. He is just trying to get a sucker to buy it. There is no way a $368 knife will cut any better than a $100 knife.

The SPecWar is a cool knife and is made with solid steel and nice design. That is a horribly inflated and customized price.

Take your money elsewhere.

Let me put it this way: That is a rip off. the pop up on ebay everyso often and go for WAY under that. There is one for sale at a local knife store near me for way cheaper.

That being said, it is a great knife, and is discontinued.

The original price for the piece with the drop leg sheath and black blade was ~$375. If this is the case with the knife you've been shown you're looking at a knife that was more expensive to make than Timberline could wholesale it for. The grinds were a nightmare, the design was very advanced for the time (it's the first "sharpened prybar" style knife made), the molding of the grip was innovative, the drop leg sheath, the kydex, the titanium carbonitride coating, etc. It was WAY ahead of it's time. If the knife is NIB and never used for any purpose $368 is a fair collector's price.

If it isn't all that, then the asking price is way out of line.

k-fyre, aren't you in Taiwan? I don't know how prices are there.

J Shirley,

You're about about several hundred miles off target dude. I live in Singapore. Anyway, I've converted all prices to US$s for the convenience of all you guys.

So.....anyone here know what the original MSRP for the specwar was?

Ps:I also have to deal with freight charges of about US$40 and other costs.
