Are these designed differently?

What are the best designs for either or both?

I have a friend that works in a metal heat treating and machine tool and design shop. He can lathe metal and designed a program to make himself a nice looking flash hider or compensator for his AK47. He's offered to make one for me.

He initially tight fit the compensator onto the barrel and tapped it into place with a rubber mallet. He is going to remove it and thread the barrel and match the barrel threads with threads for the compesator.

I have a rudamentary understanding of these things so some help is appreciated.

Here are my questions:

Is it worth the trouble?

How much louder will the .308 rifle be?

How much is recoil reduced?

Do flash hiders work well or not?

What are the technical specs of the better ones? Metal, holes/ovals/slits? Directional of the slits?

What is the best method for attaching it to a rifle barrel? Threading? Other?

What are the best designs to examine to use as a template?

Thanks.

I asked this question a couple days ago re: my 223 ar build. From the responses I got the flash hider is the way to go...but this is how it applies to a 223 AR. Since you're applying this to a larger caliber, YMMV ;) There are some nice options out there...
Good luck ;)
