Anyone know anything about these? My dad is looking at getting one (brand new, $379) to be used as a CCW weapon.

He finally found a gun that he couldn't find anything to complain about (my P228 is too big, a P239 i had him look at only holds 8 rounds, and he wants at least 10, same problem with the Kahr, he hates Glocks but won't say why, won't buy anything but a 9mm, thinks that carrying a single action in condition one is incredibly dangerous, thinks that lowering the hammer is dangerous, so he won't even chamber a single action... etc.) so i figure i should be as supportive of the purchase as possible.

Is this gun a good buy? Will it blow up and turn him into a lefty? Will normal Hi-Power mags fit in it (i know they would hang out, if they fit)?

I have seen them and handled them but I have not fired one.

There are two variants of the FN compact.

One is a double action only and the other is a double action/single action with a decocker.

Given FN's reputation you'd have to think they are excellent guns. I am really glad to hear that your dad found one for a realistic price. I looked into them when they first hit the states last year and everyone wanted a rip off price of $550 to $600+!

Let us know where your dad is getting one for this price.

Regular HP mags will not fit, I asked.

I can jump in here....the FN was attractive to me at first for all of the same reasons...all of them. The first one I saw was at a gun show a while back...sitting next to a K" series Kahr..it wasnt much bigger..visually anyway. I thought I fell in love.

I got one with nights...which are pretty good...appear to be exported Trij's. Anyway..the gun is something great until he gets to shoot it. The d/a trigger pull is a travesty! FN designed auto safeties to stack...like a brick wall right before letting the firing pin loose. :banghead: If hes that picky about everything else....Id be surprised if he likes the trigger.

For the same money or a little more...Get him a CZ PCR! Same size, weight, higher capacity 14-15 rnds with the same length grip, better ergonomics, MUCH BETTER TRIGGER in both d/a and s/a, same quality, accuracy and dependability.....

Mine has been at FN since it was 2 days old.....7 weeks ago. Mostly my gunsmiths fault...but still..its a shame that FN retails a gun for +760$ that has this trigger.....oh well. I (MAY) actually get my gun back this week....hopefully.

Have him look at the CZ's...If he likes the FN better...I guess he could do alot worse.....

shoot well

Hello,

Let me say you can trust your LIFE on any FN product. Hi quality stuff.
I have a FN HP compact I bought right before Christmas for $ 460. NIB, and it has quickly become my favorite 9MM. Ive got about 500 rounds through it with no problems at all. Amazing accuracy at 10, 12, 15 yards for me.
Poor PCRCCW has had trigger problems with his. My double action trigger is hard ( safe? ) and uneven. The single action mode has stacking but breaks clean and light. I know when its going to break evey time and I like that. The single action trigger feels way better than my two Glocks ever have. It is improving with # of rounds fired too.
PCRCCW is right about the CZ too. I have a steel compact and except for the grips and impossible to find and afford hi caps is a great pistol about the same size and price. I recommend the FN . Hope this helps.

I'd had him looking at a CZ-75 a while back before he decided he wanted a smaller gun... i'd forgotten about the PCR entirely. I'll have to find one for him to play with.
I think part of the attraction is that he already has a Hi-Power (old, but still functional... just needs some cosmetic work) with a decent amount of preban mags. He doesn't believe that the standard size HP is concealable (won't even try), and as i said he doesn't trust single action guns, so i guess it looked like the answer to all his problems.

I'll get him to take a look at the CZ PCR.

Thanks guys.

flinch...
Im glad your little HP is doing well. I guess I come across like Im anti FN or what not...but Im not. I love HP's and wanted a compact of each of the classic 9mm's...the CZ and FN. In general Im way happy with the gun...and in all honesty the trigger probably isnt that bad. Ive just been spoiled.....not by CZ's but MY CZ's  One of my PCR's is a custom..PO1 trigger and CCW trigger job....and its NICE to shoot. Stock CZ's arent bad and the new PCR has a very smooth pull to it also.
All in all the FN is very much worth considering...especially with the pricing coming down....
It looks and feels smaller than the PCR because the gun has a more compact and centralized frame design..but it also has little things that make it damn near the same size as the CZ....like the mag extension. Its a very thin gun, much like its namesake..but the thumbrest grips and decocker make it thicker than it needs to be...by just a hair.
I just wanted to clarify this....I come across with a "knock this battery off of my shoulder" thing towards FN....but Im just frustrated by the trigger not being as good as, IMO, it should be and my gun being gone for 7-8 weeks....it really is a great little gun. Hopefully better with its new trigger???????????????
Shoot well

I read about this FN Hi-power compact (unfortunately I can't find the issue) and I think it looks great!! The one thing I like most is that it's ambidextrous (southpaw here :)).

A couple of (ignoramus) questions, though:

Does it have a steel frame? I like the strength and recoil absorption of steel better than the other materials.

Is it available in .40 or .45 caliber? I have a 9mm already and I want something with more power that's still concealable.

Do they have a dealer network, or can any dealer order one?

I tried to find a website for info but had no luck; I found FN USA but it didn't have it. The FN-Herstal site only had the full-size model in 9mm. I must be doing something wrong...

Any info would be appreciated.

Hello,

I had a gun store order one last Dec. It has become my favorite 9mm. Nice size , very accurate too. $ 460.

I posted thsi on another thread for someone else that was looking for a HiPower...There are some good prices to be had lately.

Ok...here goes.

www.cdnninvestments.com show a couple HiPowers..

A silver chrome Browning lists for $599 with gold trigger, with 2 10 rounders and a 17 rounder. with all the mags you get, seems like a good deal, for a new top of the line browning.

The next three are all Belgian FN HiPowers NEW.

A blue FN hipower with SFS precocker system Mark III...$589 with 2 10s, and a 17.

DAO FN hiPower blue, with 1 10 rounder, $299 (nice)

DA/SA ambi decock , double coat military finish (?) 1 10 rounder $339 (also nice)

the last one is also available in compact, for the same prices, respectively.

Now for AIM WWW.aimsurplus.com
http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/copy_of_Pistols.html

They have the ARCUS hiPower clone for $219 in both standard and compact...I have heard that they are very worthy BHP clones, and an excellent deal for the money...and they look sweet too.

http://www.southernohiogun.com/

SOG has refurbished FN Hipowers (Argentine) that look pretty nice for $299 here http://www.southernohiogun.com/surplus_hand.html

They also have a couple other ODD ball HiPower clones real cheap (as low as 199)here:http://www.southernohiogun.com/new_hand.html

Dear SOX,

The mag base is required as part of the grip. It does not get in the way and makes for athree fingerl grip that is comfortable for the average size hand. CDNN has the mags listed for $19.99. It is a high quality mag. and helps make the grip for a double stack feel just right.
I have now 1200 + rounds through mine with Zero, No problems and the single action trigger has continued to improve. I have no complaints AT ALL,
hope this helps.
