Good Morning,

I am hoping that some of the experts here can direct me to the proper place to help me fix up an old rifle I may acquire.

A buddy of mine has been stashing a bunch of stuff in his garage for a number of years and has allowed me to go through some of it. The gun I am most interested in is a FN/FAL. It's in pieces, and has not been assembled in years, but he has a bunch of parts (2 total kits I think) and what was once a complete rifle.

The gun is a Century Arms L1A1 with an extremely low serial number (<400) and is supposed to be one of the first they produced. He had intended to build a heavy barreled version of the rifle, and bought a few parts kits. He has dropped the project for a number of reasons. I however want to finish it out, and shoot it.

My problem is I am not sure about the legality of finishing it out with a pistol grip, bolt hold open, flash hider, bi-pod, etc. The gun is in a non restrictive state, so I am not worried about any of the laws found in the states on the left and right coasts affecting my possible future project.

Currently he has a heavy barrel installed (Israeli I think) on the receiver and not much else. He told me a gunsmith took care of that and some sort of other prep work, just need to assemble all the parts. There are three lower receivers, one with a thumb hole stock, one with a regular plastic stock, and one that he has the wood parts for, all completely disassembled :( . The heavy barrel has a bi-pod and a flash hider somewhere in the gym bag along with all the parts from the other kits. This bag is full of stuff, it's got like 3 bolts (two with sand cuts), tons of springs, pins, sights, slim flash hiders, bayonets, magazines galore, some weird optic, cover plates, an operators manual with assembly instructions, refinished wood parts and some parts for other guns............... So it's a project.

What I want to do is finish it out as a heavy barrel with the wood furniture, as he intended to do years ago.

Long way to get to my question, but is it legal to use all these parts from old kits to make it operational?? My fear is that I must comply with some regulation and have a certain number of American made parts in it, but don't know where to go look for answers other than here.

If I do need to purchase some parts, where is a good (and inexpensive) source so that I can get this gun up and running.

I have more or less committed to taking it off his hands, if it is feasible to fix cheaply and if it is not going to be too much of a project. We are close enough that if I take it on, I will only have to pay for it once finished, so I can tinker with it for a while.

Problem is while I have built a dozen or so AR's, and seem fairly adept at minor stuff like this I have never worked on the FN's.

Thanks for all the help you can provide.

The link that Bwana John provided is one good place to start. In general you need to look up regulation 922(r) which limits the assembly of a "non sporting" firearm from imported parts. It is quite easy to assemble an FAL that complies with this regulation, but will likely require you to use some US-made parts.

I don't know the full history of Century's FALs, but in the off chance they imported some prior to 922(r) taking effect, it is possible that you would have a rifle that could be customized however you want without following 922(r). You would need to find out the date of manufacture of that particular rifle, which I expect that Century could provide.

I have some US made L1A1 grips if you need one for 922r compliance. I sell them at falfiles and a couple other places. You can pm me for details or if there's much interest I can put a FS thread in the classifieds here too.

Thanks Guys for your advice,

I have registered over at that forum, but don't have permission to post yet. Was able to dump the stuff out on a table and get some pictures and do a little reading. I don't know whether it will fall under the 89 or 94 provisions. It seems like Century did not import prior to 89, and I don't know if it was started on it's conversion prior to 94, so there are issues there.

jdowney, I probably will need a U.S. grip, so let me get this thing posted over there and I will look you up.

The way all the parts look, I might need to buy a receiver and build another rifle. I think I have enough for at least 3 of them.

If anyone else has some input, I would appreciate hearing from you also.

Ok, does anyone know how to get them to process their membership requests faster? (same user name as here)

I still don't have permission to post or reply to threads over there, awaiting moderation. An email I sent was returned as undeliverable.

I have also taken some pictures and as soon as I figure out a way to post them, I will get them up.

Thanks,

Thanks powermad. If I don't get some movement today, I will PM him.

I did read a lot of those threads. Kinda wish they would have cleaned them up before posting, a lot of material to go through. They have also left me with a lot of questions, some I fear I know the answer to, :scrutiny:

Well I got some pictures of the "project". Got some research to do before I start assembly.

Go play the lottery....seriously. You got one hell of a package there and if you payed less that $1200 you are stealing it from him.

Its an Isreali heavy barrel kit (from the pics I can see looks complete) along with a crap load of expensive extras. That extra L1A1 barrel alone if in good shape can fetch $150. The Imbel barrel another $75-100. The Israeali kit with the wood and all can easily fetch $500+. The trilux scope is going for $300 by itself. Not to mentin the mags, two exra lowers, the upper (worth another $200-300).

As long as the barrel was timed properly the smith who barrelled the receiver did all the hard work for you. You just need to assemble it, find headspace and install the new locking shoulder (sets headspace) Actually rather easy.

Go spend some time on Fal Files, you will learn everything you need to know about these guns and more. And post your pics over there, you will get nothing but drools over it.

Here is a quick pic of what your heavy barrel Israeli on a type 3 upper will look like

Looks like it was once a Century Arms "L1A1 Sporter".

I see you have the orginal L1A1 Sporter barrel and a second orginal military config L1A1 barrel/gas assy (the 2 w/open ear front sight gas blocks). I also see the companion L1A1 Sporter lower receiver assy (thumbhole stock) and the L1A1 military configuration lower receiver (pebel grain plastic stock/pistol grip). The wood butstock lower (and loose plastic pistol grip) are Isralie parts as are the loose wood handguards.

You also have a L1A1 Trilux scope and the proper top cover/mount assy. That's a nice addition.

You need to look at the other side of the upper reciever to see if it's a Century mfgr cast reciever or one of the Century imported IMBEL mfg recievers. It will effect your 922R parts count. The IMBEL is much prefered - but you will have to come up with 1 more USA made part to keep it in compliance.

This should help.

That is a good start to a (couple of) rifle(s) if you so desire.
Best of luck.

Thank You W.E.G. I appreciate it, I will check in soon.

rklessdriver, you guessed correctly. It was purchased as a Century Arms, before he had a smith re-barrel it. There is a picture below of the other side. I am getting afraid that I have to purchase some parts before any assembly can occur. Just don't know how many and how much. Hopefully W.E.G.'s associates will help out with that.

akolleth, thanks for the information, you give me hope that I might be able to trade some of this stuff off for compliance parts. I got a good deal, but it cleaned out the budget, LOL.

One more thing, is there an issue possessing the "safety sear" with the other parts? (I actually was told there might be, and have taken it to a friends residence so not to have it in the same house as the other parts--paranoia I guess.) I remember reading something about if you have M-16 parts and an AR rifle you could get in deep trouble. That is one thing I am trying to avoid right now.

Where are you in AZ?

Im in N. AZ near Flag and could help you out if you are close.

Looks like we might be able to have that thing shooting in less than I hour (ive got lots of 922r stuff and headspace gauges).

The "safety sear' will not fit in your receiver, its not a problem.

Bwana John, I have got to get that changed. I recently left the Littletown area outside Tuscon. Going to be staying with family in Texas until I get my feet grounded back in the real world. You don't know how much I wish I could buy you a nice steak dinner after finishing this thing out. But I am a little far down the road to come back :) (Thanks for the info on the sear.)

I just posted my first thread over at the other site. Thank you all, and any more advice is always valued.

nice viper, good luck on the build. i have always wanted a heavy barrel version, a deal came my way swapping stock m4 for a stg58 with polymer furniture. good source also is www.gunthings.com this is where i got my israeli furniture, and tool to remove buttstock a must have

Very nice ifit. With the help of the folks over at the other site, I got most all my issues figured out.

Thanks everyone for your help.

powermad, W.E.G., Bwana John et.al, I feel I owe you guys a few tall, cold adult beverages of your choice.:) Thank you very much.

If that barreled upper has a bolt that headspaces to it, snap that thing on a lower and go to the range!
