I was handling one of these in Gander Mountain recently and discovered they are on clearance @ $449.97; I was hoping someone here has had experience with this particular gun. I have handled the Browning Pro-9 and know that they are made by FN Herstal in their Carolina plant; the only operational difference between the 2 is that the Browning has a "cocked and locked" ability and the FNH FNP-9 is a decocking DA/SA; I like Beretta 92's so the transition is limited only to the ergonomics of the FNP-9

I finally got a job offer that should be finalized by the end of this month. After the 2 month orientation/probationary period, I will be communting and working 3rd shift for an indefinite amount of time. I currently own a Smitty 642 for CCW, but I lost the rest of my collection after I got fired in March. I would feel better having a reliable hi-cap 9mm or 45 for my primary handgun for the house.

I like the Beretta's as stated above, but I can't even get MY USED ONE THAT I SOLD TO GANDER MOUNTAIN back for under $575.00 since Gander Mountain has a very high markup on the new ones. I like the price of the FNP-9 and the fact it comes with 3 mags. Since it is mainly a housegun, the impact of finding a quality holster is minimized.

First, congratulations on the new job! Glad to see things taking a turn for the better for you.

Second, use this site's search function, and search the TFL site as well. You will find a lot of very good things said about these guns from folks with a lot more knowledge than myself.

Supposedly the FNP's are out with all the same features as the Pro-9 now. However, no one seems to have them and all the FNP's floating around seem to be of the decocker-only persuasion. The Brownings come with 2 mags, the FN's with 3. The decocker was redesigned, so it is personal preference whether you want the old style stiffer one (Pro-9 and older FNP's) or the newer, lighter one (new FNP's with black levers).

I just picked up my first gun ever about a week or so ago, and it is a Browning Pro-9. I've had it to the range just once and I am told that I was able to put together a pretty decent grouping for a first-time shooter (pic posted in "First time shooting ever" thread here).

ANY info you need or want can be found at the FN dedicated forum below.
We have section for each FN weapon or I should say small arm anyway.
We haven’t started a section for their vehicle-mounted machineguns but give us time
There are some small features that are not the same as the Pro-9.
Also this is the second generation of this series and there are minor changes

The FN forum is a good resource, but at least in regard to the FNP handguns, it receives much less traffic and there is actually much more model-specific information to be had here or at TFL. The last post made over on the FN forum that focuses on the FNP was on May 5. But there are one or two good range reports to be read there and on another few sites. AR-15.com and GlockTalk.com each also have a pretty good thread on the gun.

Great gun, I got rid of my first only because I wanted the FNP-M, these are just a tad smaller than the FNP's. They are about 1/4" shorter in the grip and overall length. You can still get a full grip on it, and it still holds 15 rounds. I think they are a great value. These have a super short reset in the SA mode and can be fired really quick. Talked to a rep around shotshow who said they will come in subcompact form eventually. The FNP-M was made for a European police agency spec. They will also be available in .45. Get one.

Traffic yes we are MFG specific site but we don't do to bad.
Since you are a new FN owner you should join up and give us a range report

panzermk2,

I was already signed up over there prior to purchasing my Pro-9 and have been posting over there for a bit now. It is a good resource and I do appreciate the help I have received there.

I have posted about my first trip to the range on THR, TFL, and the Florida Shooter's Network board. I cannot get the target pic to post at the FN board. I can tell you how it went and list specs but really don't feel like I can give a good range report because it is my first handgun. Due to my inexperience, I don't have a lot of other points of reference other than than what others have already said about these guns. I like the gun a lot, but it is also the only one I have really known. I can't say the trigger is better than that of a H&K or Beretta, although others have. I can't say it has a really nice SA trigger because while word is that it does, I've really got nothing to compare it with. I can't say it has rendered my Glocks to be safe queens, but some have.

What I can tell you that the decocker doesn't bother me, it is comfortable for me personally to shoot, and I am pleased with the fit and finish. I believe the gun to be nice and accurate because I am told I shot a pretty good grouping for someone who hasn't pulled the trigger on a handgun before. I shot 38 rounds at my first target. I put the first 4 shots I've ever fired in a 2 inch spread. Of 38 shots, I had 2 flyers, put 2 in the 7 ring (at 1 o'clock and 6 o'clock), 5 or 6 in the 8 ring (all between 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock), and everything else (about 27 or 28 shots) in the 9 and 10 rings. I tended to be slightly right of center and a tad low about half the time, but it appears that if I tweak what I'm doing a little, it should be a tack driver.

I did have one thing happen. I was inserting a loaded magazine and it wouldn't quite go all the way up and click in. I believe this was with the slide forward, and that with the slide locked back it did not happen. It only happened once, but then again I think I only shot like 6 magazines too. Any input as to what may have occurred there would be most appreciated. By all accounts these have been very reliable firearms.

Although my gun is a Browning Pro-9, it is practically identical to the FNP-9 and so I will post what information I can at the FN forum as well.

cool I checked after and saw your post. I had read your first posts but not your handle MY BAD.
As you have found out you and your Browning FN are welcome there also. As is any other Browning handgun owners out there.

No problem, and thanks!

As for the magazine issue I had, I have determined that it was simply that I was not giving the magazine a solid enough whack to seat it properly. Also, the last two rounds are kinda hard to load into the mag. I'm sure in time the mag springs will ease up a little, but I take this to mean it is well sprung which is a good thing.

Does the FNP have any relationship to the S&W Sigma series? The pictures look very, very similar. I've never seen either one internally, though.

Is there any pistol design the FNP is similar to, ie: lockwork and action?

Thanks.

The Sigma is actually fairly different when looked at side by side. The closest thing to a FNP-9 or Browning Pro-9 is a FN Forty-Nine pistol. Remove the external levers and hammer from the FNP-9 and it is very close to a Forty-Nine in appearance. The Forty-Nine is a striker-fired gun chambered in .40S&W with 10 rd capacity.

Heraclid,

Interesting link. Thanks.

I'm curious to see where this product line is going. Looks like it has promise and according to Correa (I think), there is an FN .45 coming, but I don't know if it's on the same platform.

I'm interested to see a SA version of this, with condition 1 capability.

Condition 1 capability has always been there in the form of the Pro-9 DA/SA version from Browning, and of course from cocked and locked every shot will be SA anyway. There are supposed to be FNP's out there now that will do it too, but good luck finding one. And there are supposed to be pure SA FNP's already on the market, but it would be hard to get your hands on one. But it is listed as an option here...

I likewise remember a few references to the upcoming .45 version from Correa and Owen, and I distinctly remember thinking it sounded like it would look a bit different just because of the context thereof. Could be wrong though.

With all my talking up of these pistols, I wish they'd see fit to send me one of those .45's on the house. :D

Mine is brand new and, the only thing I have an issue with is the mags don't fly out. Reminds me of the older Glock model magazine days when you had a 50/50 of a magazine releasing. It is not broke in so who knows. I think it is a great pistol for the and for money what a deal.
