Fn usa fnx-9

For my next handgun, I'd like to get a full-size, polymer framed 9mm.

At first I thought I wanted a striker-fired pistol, but now I'm not so sure. I kind of like the idea of a DA/SA hammer-fired weapon.

I would like to buy something made in the USA. That kind of narrows it down.

In my research I've came across the FN FNX-9. I hadn't given FN much thought for handguns, as the name always conjures images of high-end rifles and machine guns.

This particular 9mm pistol is looking better and better. It seems to have everything I want, at a really decent price. I have yet to lay my hands on one yet, though.

In the meantime, I would like to get some opinions on this gun. Anybody own one, shoot one, anything?

I have an fnp-9 and it is great. I have about 150 rounds through it and it has been flawless you really cant beat the feel in my opinion. Super light with a crisp trigger and recoil is barely there. I have heard th fnx is even better so imo it will be just as reliable as any polymer pistol. Like the trigger better than my da/sa usp 45 compact.

I too have been looking at the FN models. Thanks Mr. Camp for your detailed reviews. I always find your reviews objective and filled with little nuggets of information that are overlooked in most reviews but when added up make or break my opinion on a handgun. You have yet to do me wrong.
I think the FN9 is in my immediate future

Nice choice KAS1981. The FNX 9 is on my short list; I love hammers on poly guns. My FNP 45 USG has been great.

That was one of the best firearm reviews I've read and excellent picures too. Great job Mr. Camp! I agree a 5" LS would be great as would a 10 rd. 3.5" FNX40C.


O.P. - I've got an FNX40 and it's been flawless and fills a one-of-a-kind niche in my collection. Picked mine up for $510 OTD six months ago. I've read from X9 owners they keep the mags to 16 rounds instead of 17 which makes sense as the 40's are 14 but were supposed to be 15 from what I heard - also on the interwebs.

It really isn't a full size gun. It is about the size of a Glock 19 and SIG P229. This seems to be the preferred size for service carry now though.

I still can't figure out how the FNX is an upgrade over the FNP though...

I have a FNP-40 as well, and I agree with you -- it's not really a full size. Compared side by side with my Sig 226, it's smaller in every dimension. I remember thinking "hey, this thing isn't as big as as I thought it would be" when I took it out of the case for the first time.

My other surprise with it was the trigger. For something that's not a 1911, it's pretty darn good, in both DA and SA. At least on par with my Sig, probably better... in a gun that can be purchased for well under $500 NIB if you look around online. Oh, wait, third surprise -- the best decocker ever put on a pistol. The decocking lever is very positive, and VERY light compared to any other I have ever used.

I think that with a good holster and proper clothing choice, it wouldn't be difficult to carry. NIB FNP's are probably the best deal on a new polymer service pistol out there right now. New FNX's can be had for $515 from CDNN these days, btw.

Interesting. Could it be that the FNX is just a smidge bigger than the FNP? It does hold one more round.....

Actually, something the size of a G19 wouldn't be bad either. I know they're technically not "full size", but I just consider them on the smaller side of a full service pistol. Perhaps I should take a look at the FNP9 as well.

On another note, today I was looking at the FNP 45.....14 rounds of .45 ACP oh my! Owning another .45 wouldn't hurt, right?

I bought my FNX-9 over the winter so it only has 200 rounds through it so far (it has to share range time with my other 9ers also). I am really impressed with this pistol. I've had zero failures (didn't really expect any). I was afraid it was going to be very snappy because of it's light weight. Not so. Very low recoil for such a light pistol. Three mags and changeable backstraps. It's very easy to take down for cleaning.

The other thing that impressed me was the trigger. In SA my trigger is really nice. When I bought the gun I was all set to get an M&P Pro because the triggers were supposed to be improved on the Pro model. Well, the Pro trigger was not impressive to me. I then picked up the FNX and found the trigger I had been looking for in the M&P. It's not quite as good as an SA only trigger, but mine is pretty good for a DA/SA trigger.
It's a winner for sure.
