I lost both my hearing aids in little over a month . So small and lite, never even knew came unhooked from the ear piece . Of course was no place Where I was haveing a conversation or really need them . Trying to get replacement as I still owe couple grand on them. Company not real interested in helping with that.

Yikes.
Maybe a person needs some kind of insurance on them?
I'm planning on getting the behind-the-ear type, I understand they work better, plus nothing to aggravate my already itchy ears.

We bought the insurance. It covers 1 loss or incident of damage. If you have a dog, please don't leave them where the dog can reach them. They apparently like to chew them.

I got the in-ear ones first. I was afraid I'd lose the behind-the-ear type at work. However, the primary reason I got hearing aids was because much of my social life involves restaurants, and the in-ear aids amplify chewing sounds. The audiologist tweaked the programs several times, but he said there was only a limited amount of correction they could do. So I swapped them out for a set of behind-the-ear aids, which are *much* better in that kind of environment.

Thirty-odd years ago they had tried to sell me hearing aids, but back then they just made everything louder. I'm half deaf, but I have very sensitive ears; anything "loud" to most people is "needles of pain" for me. The programmable aids came out not long after, but it took me until a few months ago to find out about them. The audiologist set them up with a flat cutoff just below the pain level, sort of like electronic shooting muffs.

The aids aren't as useful as they could be; I found out my truck is obnoxiously loud, and fans and air conditioners are noisier than I expected, and most people have the TV way too loud... but I have almost as much trouble understanding people with the aids as I do without, because they're not speaking intelligible English. My wife speaks in some sort of hillbilly patois of sentence fragments, and even when I can make out all the words, I have NO idea what she's talking about. Other people just make some kind of modulated whine and think they're speaking. And a bunch of people seem to have some kind of brain damage, because whatever is coming out of there mouth certainly isn't speech.

Mine are VA furnished, super duper state of the art, even remotely controlled. Can easily forget you are wearing them, and I have at times forgotten to take them out, when going to bed. But reminded very quickly when lying on that ear, they tend to feel like they would pierce the ear drum at any moment. They do wonders for me, otherwise I am in a quandary since I hear NOTHING without them. Good luck finding ones that don't break the bank, AND do the job.

Haven't seen the audiologist yet (car died, mechanic said it wasn't worth fixing, spent a lot of time and energy finding and getting a suitable new (used) one). I was tested some years back when I developed tinnitus and they found hearing loss in that ear, I just didn't realize how much worse it had gotten. Anyway, meanwhile I found an outfit online that sells the fancy programmable ones for way less than the hearing aid stores, http://idealhearingaids.com/. I found their explanation of how they do that fairly persuasive, so I figure I need to get the prescription from the audiologist and then order from ideal.

I have VA supplied behind the ear devices. I can't wear them 10 months of the year here in Texas because I sweat a lot. I've sent them in for repairs about six times due to corrosion from sweat. Never have worn them to bed.
