Belief : After WWII, the effectiveness of squad based man-portable fully automatic weapons is proven in combat. As these weapons are disseminated throughout civilian populations as a force multiplier, governments around the world react with prohibitive measures to stem the flow of these armaments to civilian populations.

Fact : 1968 GCA prohibits new manufacture of these weapons for dispersion to civilians, and puts onerous requirements on possession - including but not limited to an additional tax, and federally mandated registry. The passage of this restriction is touted by many gun possessors as "government driven" disarmament, and is used as a reference point for government imposed restrictions on private weapon ownership for years to come.

Belief : After the Vietnam War, it is established that squad based firepower combined with overwhelming air-superiority are not sufficient to defeat an entrenched and resolved home-established guerrilla force fighting on "home turf".

Fact : The 1994 "assault weapons ban" limits manufacture and possession of a wide variety of semi-automatic "combat arms" whose primary features are enhanced delivery of high volume sustained semi-automatic fire. As the sunset provision of this law comes into effect in 2004, gun possessors once again point to "government driven" restrictions on private weapons ownership. The ban lifts, and America is for a brief period allowed to rearm as it sees fit - although within the restrictions of the 1968 GCA.

Belief : Beginning in 2005, extensive media coverage is granted to any incident involving "assault weapons". The term "assault weapon" is both stylized and glorified by the American media in ways never used before, effectively. In the second decade of the 21st century, a select grouping of high-profile murders involving "assault weapons" is widely and insensitively circulated by mainstream media.

Fact : in 2013.................... (insert your thoughts here- we aren't here yet. Doesn't seem like its the government mandating the disarmament this time, does it ? )

Discuss.......dissect........disseminate......... ?

Wrong on both counts.

The '34 NFA made MGs and other weapons a restricted class.

The '68 GCA affected importation.

The Hughes amendment to the '86 FOPA closed the registry for transferable MGs.

*stands corrected*

thats part of the process :D

So, presented correctly :

Fact : The 1934 NFA made machine guns and other weapons a restricted class, and puts onerous requirements on possession - including but not limited to an additional tax, and federally mandated registry.

Correct ?

Sometimes taking the information we receive from mixed media can be misleading.......... Thanks for the clarification, MachIV

Trying to get a running tally here, so I can keep this stuff straight........
