I have a RSC made by Cannon, rebranded as an Oxbow. It has an electronic lock that has not given me any problems - yet - but I'm considering changing it out to a mechanical or a dual electronic/mechanical. What's your take on this: http://www.mbausa.com/item.asp?num=SR-XTREME# ? If this is a reliable unit, I might even change the mechanical out of my Summit Denali to one - but I want to be sure the mechanical feature doesn't merely activate an electric solenoid...

Or would you recommend a straight mechanical?

Your safes likely have a UL RSC rating. Not that it's the end of the world, but that rating requires the use of a UL rated lock. Although there has been talk of that lock being rated, at this point to my knowledge it is not.

I tend use the LaGard redundant. It's been around awhile, and has a UL rating. It does involve a bit of extra work, and may not work in all safes due to the depth of the lock body.

TeachU2;

Provided your safe has a U.L. pattern for the lock, and it should if it's a U.L. rated container, there's a couple of choices. The Xtreme isn't one of them. I'd look at a LaGard 33e, it is an electronic combination, but mechanical bolt movement. The batteries are within the safe, but there is a way to supply electricity to the "brain" if, for some reason, the battery dies or fails. I think LaGard may have updated beyond this model designation at this time. You'll find 33e's in bank applications, it's a very good electronic lock, and there still should be some available I'd think. Otherwise, go with an S&G 6730 type mechanical.
