I once found a Sears weed eater at the local dump when I lived in Georgia. I took it to Sears and they fixed it because it was still in good shape. I think it cost me $15 to $20. When living in Wisconsin, I was walking my dog and spied a Cabela's heavy duty lawn chair. I took it to Cabela"s and said I have this chair that is broken--- BINGO I got a chair that was better than the broken one. When I was much younger in the late 50's through the 60's, the guy that ran the dump always had a wad of cash in his pocket that would choke a horse . When he died, his gold coin collection was donated to a University. My brother and I always wanted to go to the country dump late in the day to shoot rats. All is gone now due to trash compactors and everything in the large trash cans that hide some good stuff. The classic dumpster diving story deals with the local Winchester Hardware store that was down town in Wisconsin. In the 1980's they moved from the downtown location to the outskirts of town to have more room and a new building. The had several dumpsters of Winchester ( it was an original Winchester Store starting from the teens and 20's) and other sporting goods stuff that was in the upper floor and basement. Two clever guys dumpster dived for days, until the cops found what they were doing. They took them to the cop shop, and the guy in charge said if it was in the dumpster there were no rules broken. This was told to me by my brother who knew the divers, and bought some good stuff from them. I am never that lucky
