Well i spent the weekend at my grandparents [got home today], and i found something odd at a small gun shop in Lawrenceburg[can't spell it]. I have absolutely no idea what it is.

sadly i have no camera, but i know what i looks like. It was roughly the size of a m44 [little longer]. It was chambered in 30-06. that would seem normal except that it has Japanese marking just above the bolt[the part in front of it]. i didn't see a marked out "mum", so it's not some Arisaka variant as far as i can tell. the back of the bolt is marked up [looks sorta like a meat tenderizing mallets end, except smoother]. My grandfather described it as being "built like a brick Sh** house". If you saw it you would agree. the bolt moves nicely, but not sure what kind of action it's based on. any idea what this is?

P.S it's about $200 so i might pick it up depending on how holiday shopping goes.

EDIT: i'm not sure if they were added but it had lyman sight. it's a circular thing with a hole in the rear the front is a post. [i think it's called peep sights].

it may be an arisaka carbine from after the war when the mums were all ground off

it isnt uncommon for people to rebarrel old guns ina more common round

thats my bet

I've been thinking it's an Arisaka still but can't find anything that looks like this one. plus it doesn't look "bubba'd" to 30-06. the barrel looks factory and say 30-06 right on it. if it wasn't for that I'd say it was some weird Arisaka right along with you.

It sounds very much like an Arisaka that has been commercially rebarrelled...the knurled pattern on the back of the bolt (which is the safety, BTW - push in and rotate) is an Arisaka thing. There should be some characters on the left (non bolt handle) side of the receiver, and there should be a couple characters on top of the receiver ring (though maybe they were ground off with the mum or by a previous owner who didn't want them there).

A Lyman sight would be attached to the side of the receiver and extend up over the top. Most models of Arisaka had aperture (aka peep) sights to begin with, so they may not be aftermarket.

As always with this sort of thread, photos would be very helpful.

Like i said i'd get a photo if i could. but yeah i know what you mean. been doing more research it does seem alot like an arisaka. It does also have a bent bolt, instead of a straight bolt. if this is an arisaka, would it be a good deer rifle.

p.s it is in 30-06

If it shoots straight, is in .30-06, and isn't too heavy for you to tote around, should be OK for a deer rifle. .30-06 will knock down just about anything in North America, as long as it's in good working order and is accurate.

Might want to try and knock 'em down on that price though, not sure a modified Arisaka is worth $200. You could get a good unmodified Mosin-Nagant 91/30, M44 or M38 for less than half that, and soft-nosed hunting ammo is available in 7.62x54R.

I was thinking if i gave them cash i could possibly get it at least 150-180. not much but i should at least have some money left over to get some ammo. Speaking of which what's the best place to get some cheap 30-06. Still apprehensive about it though, mostly because i want to get a game, but who's gonna pass up something like this.

EDIT: a military surplus store was selling a P.O.S mosin 91/30 for 300 o.0

I've seen quite a few Arisaka's rechambered to .30-06 so it's not necessarily uncommon.

Bolt knob looks like this one?

Sporterized Arisakas go for about $49 to $99 around here, retail. Shopowners will give you about $25 for it.

The Arisaka is a great battle rifle, but a chopped one isn't worth the time spent looking at it. Save up for an original one, or just buy a complete original Mosin for a little over $100 retail.

Maine.

Everyone brought an Arisaka back from the Pacific and sporterized it. They're thick as fleas. Only more common gun is Winchester 94, for $200 to $250 in excellent condition -- every gun shop has a dozen. They try not to accumulate more than one Arisaka, as nobody wants a sporterized one.

Yeah I'm gonna see if i can offer him 150 cash on the spot. :) that should butter him up and get me the gun. plus my mums still a little apprehensive about me having guns, so i have to buy more with my money than just a gun. Before i went to the shop i was gonna get Warhammer online and some other computer junk.

Also what's the cheapest ammo to put through these guns [30-06]

If it's your first gun, a .22 would be better.

However, CPM 30-06 is as follows :192 rounds of Greek surplus costs in en-bloc clips costs $60,(You don't need the clips unless you own a Garand, and I believe they can only be used in a Garand.) 240rounds of the same ammo in 20 rounds boxes costs $67, and 250 rounds of lake city 30-06 costs $70.

This isn't my first gun *laughs* my grandfather's got my .22 at the moment, and i've got my Mossberg 500a sitting on a shelve not 6 steps away from me. :)

This will my my first Real rifle though.

1 question, how do you get to be in the CMP

Possibly a type 99 originally in 7.7, rechambered to 30'06. Similar in scope to the 8mm-06 that was done to Mausers. This was done because of the lack of original ammo back in the day.

You may need to reload using .311 dia. bullets if it's an original barrel.

I think you have to provide proof of shooting activity to order a rifle from them, but I'm not sure you have to meet any requirements to get ammunition.

Yeah that might work [sarcasm]

Sorry i was posting that last one kinda fast. She said since were moving within city limits i won't be able to shoot as much anymore. so next year around my birthday [nov-1] she said i can get a hunting rifle. i don't really get it myself, although i sort of understand where she's coming from. oh well. the guns been their for almost a year, it'll still be their. :)
