Local paper has a lost and found ad that's not the usual dog or cat.
A 30-06 rifle w/ 10x50 scope in a case was left in the Walmart parking lot.
Some kind of fancy rifle. Ad says security video tape , description of vehicle and person picking up gun have been given to police, but I don't really think they know who found it since this apparently happened 2 weeks ago.
Talk about spacing out.

Ya really think they have anything on tape? :neener:

Security tapes are only kept for a short time. Then they're erased and used again. So it would depend on how soon they notified the store.

Actually, a lot of systems now don't use tapes at all, they are DVR systems. When we need to save a segment or give it to the PD, we burn it off on a DVD.

I'm in the retail loss prevention business. Judging by the number of cameras I see, Wm probably has 95% or more of their parking lots covered with cctv cameras.

Very few retailers still use video tape. Even most I'd your mom and pop places store video on a hdd and just burn a copy for Leo's when they need it. Video tapes are expensive and unreliable.

Oh thank heavens they found it!! I was wondering which big-box grocery store parking lot I left it in. I wonder if they'd be willing to ship it back to me though.

I'm due to find a gun. I found an uncle mike's holster in a pile of leaves in the alley once. And $153 cash on the sidewalk in front of my house once. And an ounce of pot in a city parking lot in Blacksburg in 1971. I tell you, I'm due.

heres a thought
why would someone have a rifle at walmart unless they just bought it?
and if you just bought it wouldnt you think youd remember to put it in your vehicle?
only logical thought is it was in the vehicle and unloaded to make room for bags and forgotten but that just brings me back to my first question

About 6 years ago in Central Fl. there was a local news story of a good samaritin turning an assault rifle that he found on the side of the road. Upon checking with some LE friends I found out the rest of the story; a local sheriff's deputy got a flat and had to empty the trunk to get to the spare, he refilled the trunk, except for his AR 15 and spare mags and ammo in a ballistic nylon case. The person that found it turned it in before the deputy knew it was missing.

Glass houses.........

Well, Dimis, I do believe that you answered your own question....

I'm glad that you threw the 1st stone because I sure couldn't have. I live in a glass house and have forgotten to put everything back into my truck when unloading/reloading for a much needed rearraingement job. :cuss:

its more of a rhetorical question than a serious inquary

my point was more to the fact that you shouldnt be that careless with your firearm to have left it in a parkinglot in the first place

other than an early morning hunter picking up some supplies who else would really have a .30-06 at walmart?

unless im the only one that DOESNT carry my hunting equipment 100% of the time

oh and yes i have forgotten to put things back in the vehicle while loading groceries but im not careless with firearms either so i can still throw the stones at my one wooden wall in my glass house

I do carry at least 1 handgun and usually 1 rifle in my vehicle all of the time - I never know when I may need them. That being said, my rifle has a home in the truck and would NEVER be removed even for an instant to make room for something else to fit in in a parking lot.

Sometimes, it's the 30-06 that I carry however - fine caliber!

Walmart apparently does have very sophisticated video surveillance of their parking lots. I read a news story some time ago about a woman who dropped her diamond engagement ring in a Walmart parking lot. Walmart security found video of someone picking up the ring and getting into their car with it. They provided the car's plate number to the police who contacted the finder and recovered the ring.

If I understand it:

The guy who lost it, was the one who put the ad in the paper.
They know who lost it. That ain't no mystery.

What they don't know, is the identity of the guy who found it and drove away with it.

CoRoMo says,

Wonderful! Now, please provide a detailed description and serial number. :D

I've never been one to leave a hunting rifle/shotgun in the car overnight, but a lot of people do if for no other reason to keep from carrying it in and out of a warm/cold environment, which can cause condensation and rust. It's hunting season around most of the country you know.

Logically someone took the rifle out to load the vehicle, and forgot to put it back in.

Again, never say never. I've lost many a thermos to the black hole on the roof of a vehicle.

it was probably taken out of the vehicle by a hunters wife. thinking...."I'll fix him, leave me home for 2 weeks while he goes off gambling, drinking beer and snoozing in the woods. HMMMF!" only problem if it was me, and i saw that on tape, there would be some papers filled out at the courthouse really fast!

It is just possible we are looking at the whole thing backwards... they could be looking for the person who left/lost the rifle.
Good question, blume357. Although this text in the OP leads us to believe that they don't know who found it and picked it up, so that's the reason for the lost/found advertisement. If they don't know who found it, WalMart surely wouldn't have put an ad in the paper. But I guess we'll never know for sure.

Walmart doesnt record all the time with every camera. I know someone who was attacked in a WalMart parking lot, and fought off the attacker, actually kicking the crap out of the person. The police went to get the tape, no more than 20 minutes after it occured and they were told that they only record on certain cameras at certain times. Half the parking lot was not being recorded, and it was the half she was on.

Why would you post your name and location, then announce to the world that you have multiple firearms in your car?
