One of my friends from highschool is in Iraq right now with the Marines and I would like to send him something that he could really use over there but I am not to sure what that is. I was thinking like a nice knife or a Surefire flashlight and lots of batteries would be good. I don't know if he has a M9 but if he did can you send magazines to them, same with his M4, because some really nice magazines would definitely be worth it.

"reading material" is always appreciated. He doesn't need M9 mags, nor could he use any you sent him as they would not be Mil Spec.

Boresnake for sure. Any cleaning supplies like .22 cal patches are good, magazines (publications on sports, cars, shooting, etc.) too. Vanilla Wafers and non chocolate cookies, hard candies and gum are also good. If he is humping it in the dust, the "wipes" are handy, as is chapstick. A Gerber Mulitplyer is a great and handy tool. They stay together under heavy use.
Mainly, send anything you can as often as you can. It helps big time. I know, because my Soldier Son is returning from the sand box in weeks (not months) from now.

For a pretty rich chocolate cookie that won't melt, I try to find Mi-del chocolate snaps when camping. Used to take them on fires when I worked for the FS. A lot of places carry their ginger snaps and lemon snaps, but the chocolate are harder to find.

Just remeber, most bases, fobs,etc have some sort of px...m&ms are in mres... I havent ever seen a px/gedunk stand etc that didnt have gerber this and kabar that...
I always liked a good letter from home with lotsa pictures, recent pictures, hi-quality prints with the narrow white borders, of the places, people and things I missed...
That and porn... but the higher moral standards of the Middle East and our military's respect of that as such limit such trivial things... although a dvd in a pg-13 movie box, then re-shrink wrapped has been know to make it through on occassion...

My best friend is going over in December. I've heard a few folks tell about how they sent little ziplock bags of dirt and grass seed from home so soldiers could have a little lawn just like home.
How would you even package something like that so it wouldn't spill? Would you have to label it a certain way?
What are the reasons that a package wouldn't get through? I'd hate to have a package full of goodies get stopped somewhere, or lost, or torn apart for "suspicious contents", etc because it wasn't packed/labeled right.

There are some websites that are devoted to things to send to service people you can look up on the net. We used them when our nephew was over there. I would stay away from gun related equipment, I don't think the military wants after market magazines used on their guns. Unless he says you can do this I would not try.

Why dont you ask what he needs/wants? If he can get to the PX he can get most food stuffs etc. but if he is not there the Gatorade/iced tea powders are great to get along with the wipes!!! I had my family send me the anti bacterial ones. If he needs sunglasses wileyX are a high want item. Foot powder is a good thing, maybe even new insoles for the boots. Lots of guys like to get the under armor (wicking) shirts too as they keep you quite cool. And as far as magazines, nothing more than Maxim/FHM or he could get in a bit of trouble.
But with all said above anything he gets from home is SO VERY WELCOME!! And why not add a few things for his crew? JOlly Ranchers/ Gum etc?
