This isn't really a gun related question. But it is military so I'm going to give it a try.
One of my co-workers is deploying to Iraq soon and we are planning on throwing him a little going away dinner and present him with a gift.
We were thinking about a digital camera but he bought one the other day along with a laptop. He has a pretty good laptop case so that's out. I don't want to get him something "Tactical" as much as something he might use like a camera.
He has a good knife. I thought about a Surefire.
Any suggestions?

"2" for the care packages. One every few months or so with things from the states. Candy, paperback books, etc. Have him write what he would like from back home every so often and bam! you have the gift that keeps on giving.

Every time I have been deployed I have always wanted a good radio, a flashlight, and letters from home.
The care packages would be really appreciated. Snacks, paperbacks, socks, any kind of pogy bait is a very welcome treat.

Some good Beretta 9mm mags or High-reliablility mags from HK would have made my day in the sandbox. Don't ignore the other suggestions, they're great too.

My suggestion is care packages with candy that does not melt!!! Other small inexpensive items are treasured or traded. Democracy is helped by winning hearts and minds and TONS of candy and trinkets have passed to the youngsters in IRAQ by soldiers who received them from loving friends and families back home. Certainly cards from church and family are treasured, we would have walls in the headquarters filled with mail from strangers. It helps to know that your efforts have not been forgotten.

For a close friend, flashlights, knives and games are the way to go. Just remember these gifts will probably not make it back home, they get passed on to the replacement GI's. Bottom line you get so many duffel bags of stuff to carry home.

I vote for a flashlight, but,,, from my time in the service, sometimes no batteries are handy. So, LED is the way to go. for about 40$ you can get a 7 LED, four AA cell, pocket size light that will produce light for many hours. I think 100? hours is their claim. One would be a treasure. Think about being out in the desert with a pocket light you could use to read a paperback book without replacing batteries, even one time? It is more of a flood light than a spot light, so it is not a replacement for a tactical light.

I hope you find a gift he likes.

I favor the twice a week letter with local news. As a G.I. in a remote assignment I can attest what this can do for morale.........Essex

My recommendations:

A good LED flashlight that is small and runs on common batteries. I bought a fantastic one at the Ft Bliss Px for $12. I wish I bought 10, as many others have shown envy and desire towards my flashlight.

Powder drink mix. This is available at the Px and DFAC, but they run out at times. Also, it is always the same Rasberry Ice flavor that I hate.

I brought a Dell Axim pocket PC and read ebooks on it. It has a backlit screen (I can read at night without bothering anyone else), and the charger works with 220VAC. A 1MB SD or CF card can carry hundred of books, plus pictures, music, even video clips. It fits in a standard GI first aid pouch. I got mine from the Dell Outlet. Sometimes they have special deals or coupons for new ones.

Packages from home are critical, as is any mail or anything to connect you with friends and family.

Eyewear. A good pair of ballistic sunglasses with a shape that protects from wind and dust. Wiley-X or similar.

A couple good knives. A good rescue type knife for cutting seatbelts that can clip into the little webbing points on a IBA vest. Maybe a nice k-bar or some sort of double edged dagger type knife. Oh - don't forget the multi-tool. Very handy for crab legs at the DFAC.

However - most of the above is available at the Px at the stateside deployment center. Or the Px in Kuwait. Or the Px in Iraq. Also the new issue goggles are pretty good. The issue boots are pretty good. Most of the issue gear is much better than 20 years ago.

I've seen footlockers full of brand new pistol magazines (I literally mean a large footlocker absolutely full of first quality brand new factory mags) that no one wants because they don't know what to do with the magazines they already have. This may not be typical, but most units rotating out dump ammo and magazines on their way out and the units that get stuck with them are pissed that they have to figure out where to put the stuff.

A lot depends on the assignment. If you are at a desk ina FOB, by all means bring the karaoke machine and lava lamp. If you are in a rifle squad in a line unit, forget all that crap.

Oh - real important - bring D-ring/karabiners for attaching stuff to your body. Or to attach your body to a hoist if need be. For hanging your helmet off your IBA while in a building the cheap ones work fine.

Lastly, many companies ship to APO addresses. The internet is available to all, even if intermittently.

forget the xbox...go whole hog for him....pre-order a playstation3, and mail it along with a bunch of first person shooters:D that'll get him through.

I'd also recommend a newspaper here and there. Maybe just send the Sunday edition every week, the paper will be enjoyed by more than just one guy. I wouldn't pick up any optics now, as he'll probably get issued some, same for Surefire.

How about an MP3 player. Sansa makes some pretty inexpensive ones that run off of AAA batteries. Might help him aleve the downtime boredom.

Nothing spells appreciation like a Aimpoint Comp M to set atop his issue weapon.

I would say that if he is in a mos that needs acog's or aimpoints, then the unit will issue him, one, if he is not in a position to need one then there is no reason to have one, just extra for him to keep up with. now i do think that it would be a great i dea to get him one if say he was in a combat arms mos, and the unit didn't have the means to supply them with such things.

I loved care packages, batteries are always good to have , the px runs out quick! i loved fresh socks too!

If he is into weapons, you might get him a subscription to a gun magazine!

Thanks for all the ideas.
We ended up getting him a WM gift card and letting him pick out his own stuff. I'm sure if he has any left over after
he leaves he can use it online over there.
We plan on sending regular care packages and those ideas we'll use too.

Don't forget the care packages jsut because he got a gift! I have found it was the cheapest stuff I sent to my brother that the unit liked best (old Shotgun News magazines I was to throw out). Beef jerky and trail mix came in second (although it didn't last even one day!)

I always send some tobacco, I know my brother doesn't use, but to I'd hate to be stuck over there AND have a monkey to deal with... Also it makes me feel better knowing that should one of his boys not make it home, at least had some happiness that day.... :(
