Just got my USGI M1 Garand from the CMP today! CMP South got my order on 7-22-04 and shipped it yesterday (7-29-04) Fed Ex overnight. I got a service grade Springfield Armory M1 made in December of 1943 (serial number 2286xxx). Don't have time to disassemble and clean it right now, but cosmetically it's okay. Stock has plenty of dings and gouges, but I didn't find any cracks when I gave it a once-over. It's still servicable, and has the "P" cartouche on the grip. Parkerizing is dull and partly worn, but has no rust and metal looks undamaged.

Windage knob says "Left" with an arrow indicating which direction to turn the knob, and also says "Wright" in smaller letters on the other side. Uh, please tell me they didn't misspell "Right" on the knob :uhoh: .

Bore is mostly shiny with no pitting. Didn't have any 30-06 ammo on hand, so I used a 7.62x39mm snap-cap as a very makeshift muzzle erosion gauge  . FWIW, it seems fine. Cosmetically I've seen Service Grade CMP Garands that have looked worse, so I guess I got lucky a bit. The proof's in the pudding, so to speak, so until I actually shoot the rifle, I can't say whether or not it's good, but all signs seem to point to a good deal from the CMP, as everything seems as described.

BTW, I am going to borrow a friend's copy of one of Scott Duff's books on the Garand, so I should be in good hands, but I thought I'd post here anyways in case anyone is interested.

Also, the barrel is marked: SA 6535xxx 8 65 Y78

Where can I find info on the barrel, such as date of manufacture, etc. ?
