Here we go... :D

The one, the best, the only full size gun, the 1911. The best, the largest, the only one, the .45 ACP.

Ok Seriously.

9mm - Browning Hi Power, SIG P210, SIG P226, SIG X5,

.40 - HK USP

.45 - 1911. Only 1911.

SIG Sauer P226

Flawless construction, superb reliability, scary degree of accuracy, great balance.

Only downside is high price.

I carry a 9mm, a TDA, double-stack Smith & Wesson 59 series. Never had any problem with it, it's light, accurate, points well, feels good to me.
No plans to change.

I am a CZ fan, so take my recommendations with a grain of salt, but for general target shooting, you can't beat the CZ-75 in 9mm. The ammo is cheap, it is extremely pointable, and you will never be under gunned. This is about the ideal all around gun.

For competition, I would move up to the CZ in 40S&W due to the power factor in IPSC.

Beyond these two recommendations, I would go to a 1911 in 45ACP. A 1911 is never a bad decision.
