Yesterday was primarily handgun day, but I always take a 22 rifle and I threw in an AR this time too. In addition to target boards at 25, 50, 100, 200, and 300 some members have hung 6" steel plates at 250, 300, and 400.

I decided to try the plates with my Tikka T1X and AR. I didn't have a lot of time, I had to be somewhere else so I didn't fire many shots. I have a Leupold with CDS dials on it. By using the trial and error method I've figured out where to set it at 50, 100, and 200. But wasn't sure about 250. I loaded up a 10 round mag and didn't get a single hit as I kept trying different settings.

Finally got smart and with the next magazine fired at a rock in the dirt near the target so I could see where I was hitting. I ended up maxing out the scopes elevation and was still a bit low with the 2nd shot. Fired the next 8 shots holding about 1" over and got 6 hits. The bigger mark in the center is from the 223 that I'd fired earlier.

I'd like to start working on 300, but can't make it work with this scope. Tikka on the bottom. The scope on the upper rifle will probably have enough adjustment. I need to take it next time, or swap scopes. It isn't quite as accurate as the Tikka, but I think close enough to get some hits.

I only put 3 rounds through the AR. The one shot at 250, then 2 more at 300. Sometimes it is best to quit while you're ahead.

Use this on the Action Pistol berms for your Action VZ-58 and Action AKM!

About $1.50 per block at Loew's or H. D. is too much trouble and cost? I'm not saying that it's any type of Zen Buddhism at all, but if basic fun is more important than needing to feeling like a 200/400-yard sniper,
You and the Target are Still "One".... with fun feedback at 25/30 yards (Action Pistol limit ;)).

I've been playing with shooting 22's at longer range for about a year now. It was just too boring at 50 yards. I shoot at a private club and normally don't like to shoot at ranges much farther than 200 if there are any others there. It just takes too long to set up targets and check them and I don't like to limit others shooting time.

I've placed some clay targets on the berm behind the 200 yard targets in the past. With a 200 yard zero it didn't take much hold over to get consistent hits. At least when the wind is calm. I don't shoot past 100 if there is any wind.

My gun club used to have steel targets on the pistol range, one a 25 yards and 3 at 15 yards. I used to love shooting two 5 round mags, one shot at 40 yards and three at 25 yards , back to 40, change mags and do it again. I got good pretty good at hitting all ten shots., But there was a shooting accident at the range, nothing too serious, and the insurance co.'s got involved forcing the club to shut down the pistol side or do major remolding. With only volunteer help the pistol side was down all last summer. One major change was no more steel targets !!! :fire:. Takes the fun out of my pistol shooting !!! hdbiker

I don't think the range put these up. I think a member, or members did so on their own. But at 250, 300, and 400 yards I don't think we have to worry about anyone getting hit by a ricochet. We have one or 2 employees working the clubhouse and shotgun side of the club. The guys who shoot at the pistol and rifle ranges are on their own and are unsupervised.

I'm retired and tend to get there a few minutes before opening and have my targets up by 8AM. I might go occasionally on Sunday, but never Saturday and even during the week I'm gone by 11 if not sooner. I usually have the place to myself, but there are 2-3 regulars who often show up at the same time. We all get along well and I've never seen anything that made me uncomfortable.

The guys who work in the clubhouse have some interesting stories about the Saturday crowds.
