Yesterday was primarily handgun day, but I always take a 22 rifle and I threw in an AR this time too. In addition to target boards at 25, 50, 100, 200, and 300 some members have hung 6" steel plates at 250, 300, and 400.
I decided to try the plates with my Tikka T1X and AR. I didn't have a lot of time, I had to be somewhere else so I didn't fire many shots. I have a Leupold with CDS dials on it. By using the trial and error method I've figured out where to set it at 50, 100, and 200. But wasn't sure about 250. I loaded up a 10 round mag and didn't get a single hit as I kept trying different settings.
Finally got smart and with the next magazine fired at a rock in the dirt near the target so I could see where I was hitting. I ended up maxing out the scopes elevation and was still a bit low with the 2nd shot. Fired the next 8 shots holding about 1" over and got 6 hits. The bigger mark in the center is from the 223 that I'd fired earlier.
I'd like to start working on 300, but can't make it work with this scope. Tikka on the bottom. The scope on the upper rifle will probably have enough adjustment. I need to take it next time, or swap scopes. It isn't quite as accurate as the Tikka, but I think close enough to get some hits.
I only put 3 rounds through the AR. The one shot at 250, then 2 more at 300. Sometimes it is best to quit while you're ahead.
