...good blades with crappy sheaths?
I have this Benchmade Arvensis, which I love. The 6.5 inch clip point 154CM blade is about as versatile and utilitarian as it is possible for a knife to be, IMO. It is well made, perfectly balanced, and the edge geometry is flawless. It cuts like a chainsaw and keeps an edge. My only complaint is the Mickey Mouse POS contraption they sent as a sheath. The flimsy feeling belt clip digs into your side. I am 6'6" and about 230, so not exactly fat, but the included belt clip is still extremely uncomfortable to me. It places the knife too low to be readily concealed and too high to use a lanyard. I tried removing it and using every possible combination of zip ties and p-cord to attach it, with very limited success. I don't know if it is actual Kydex or just plastic, but it doesn't retain the knife--if you hold the knife upside down, the slightest jarring motion sends it clattering to the floor. So they have this faux leather strap to assist the complete lack of retention, but it isn't exactly confidence inspiring and pretty much just serves to flop over and require two hands to re-sheath the knife. Basically, it is the most poorly designed and constructed thing I've ever seen the Benchmade logo on, it is impossible to carry the knife in a manner that is comfortable, safe, and convenient in the included sheath. I've seen better sheaths on $10 gas station knives, and I am looking to replace it. A good Kydex rig with actual retention would work, a well-built nylon sheath like the one that came with my OKC Spearpoint Bowie would work, even a decent but simple leather rig like the one my Kabar came with would work.
And why is it almost too much to ask these days to get a functional sheath with the knife? My CRKT Sangrador was the same way--excellent knife with a dysfunctional garbage sheath.
