So I picked up a box of 175 gr Federal Fusion soft point bullets for my old 7 x57 mauser. I now realize that those were designed for the 7 mm magnums. Does anyone know if they will expand properly on deer at the slower velocities of the 7x57?

Terminal ballistics are designed around an impact velosity. Range to target is going to be critical part of this question and answer. If your target is short range I believe your good because you will still be in a good velocity window. I have no data for a more refined answer.

Thanks, I'm thinking the same thing. I've never shot a deer that was over 100 yds away. Bullet should be cruising around 2300-2500 fps at that distance. Maybe I'll just run some tests and see what they do.

Maybe see if you can get federal on the horn and ask about the expansion velocities of them. Unfortunately I can’t find the info on there site like I was hoping. Seems, like others, they may be more interested in flashy packaging then providing valuable info on the box.
