Alleged stalker confronts pair, is shot and killed

By ARIEL HART

Published on: 10/16/05

A man who was allegedly stalking his ex-girlfriend was shot and killed by the woman's new boyfriend after he confronted the pair at a Fulton County apartment, police said.

Fulton County police spokesman Gary Syblis said the 35-year-old ex-boyfriend, who was not identified, approached the man and the woman as they were arriving home after midnight Friday at the Stratford Apartments on Glenridge Drive.

The former boyfriend pulled out a gun, prompting the current boyfriend to draw his own gun and shoot him in the head, Syblis said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A neighbor heard the shots and called police.

The ex-girlfriend told police that "apparently he's been stalking her for some time, aggressively stalking and making threats against her," Syblis said Saturday.

He said he did not know the names of the ex-girlfriend and the other man.

Amazing how some people think they can just stalk or commit some act without thinking that the other folks might have some firepower to deal with them.

Yes, assuming the story is accurate.

Syblis, the spokesperson for the police, had no idea of the names of the girlfriend, new boyfriend (shooter) or ex-boyfriend (shootee, not identified). The girlfriend claims the ex had been aggressively stalking her and making threats, but apparently at the time of the press release, the police hadn't checked or had not found any record of the woman having reported the stalking and threats.

It may just be the reporting, but there seems to be a lot of significant information missing and the story doesn't seem on the up and up.

Well, there are almost never enough details in a story for everyone to sit back and say "Ok he got what was coming to him." But even with the sorry reporting, I would guess that since the deceased was an ex, he should have steered clear of the new beau and his girlfriend.

That is because in the majority of cases, there is not any firepower for the criminals to contend with, not in our PC, feminized society. :cuss: :cuss: :cuss:

But y'all just don't KNOW what really happened to be able to cheer or boo on this. For example, let's try this version:

Working schmo ExBF and his live-in GF have an argument over GF's meth habit. In a fit of spite, the GF changes the locks on doors to their shared apartment while ExBF is at work, effectively preventing ExBF from getting any of his stuff and leaving him homeless. HA! Serves him right, thinks GF, who takes up with the PoolBoy - her meth dealer. After spending several nights outdoors, ExBF decides to confront her and demand his stuff back. But PoolBoy is with her, and pulls out a pistole to bluff the ExBF off. Now, being an avid reader of Internet forums, ExBF knows that his only hope is to draw in self-defense. Too bad for him, he failed to take the prerequisite tactical training courses needed to master his weapons and himself, and (being too slow and untactical) gets popped in the head for his effort. So, we wind up with one dead exBF and a PB and GF that have to make it look like self-defense. He's a stalker, they decide - that's the ticket! No proof needed, and plausible deniability all the way around.

My story seems to fit all of the know facts just as well as the press account, and yet they have vastly different implications. ExBF may be a bad guy, and in that case godspeed on his way to his eternal reward. ExBF may also just be schmuck that got screwed by poor judgement in women and timing.

And I can't cheer on his death if I can't tell the difference.

First, not all stalking is reported to the police, out of fear of further angering the stalker.

Second, the alleged stalking is irrelevant anyway.

If the ex-boyfriend approached the two and pulled a gun on them, that action alone gave the other guy the right to pull his own gun and shoot in self-defense. The incident boiled down to an act of self-defense, whether there was a history of stalking or not.

rbernie,
you also make a good point with your alternate story. But the possibility of a story being fabricated exists with any apparent self-defense shooting in which there are no witnesses.

Very few people can rehearse a false story well enough to tell it the same way when separated. I can only assume that the Atlanta detectives would be as adept in finding discrepancies as would be their brethren everywhere else in the nation...

Absolutely. Which is why I'll wait to form my opinion when the APD weighs in, not based upon what Ariel Hart of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has to offer.

well, you draw, you get what you asked for.

The report of the events was conveyed directly by a spokesman for the police department.

They say don't pull a gun unless you plan on using it. So it sounds like to me weather he was stalking or not he got what he deserved. It also sounds like this couple probably prevented how many other crimes. This is the kind of person we don't need in society(someone that can't settle differences without deadly violence).
