Father Shoots, Injures Intruder

An Atlanta man says he shot an intruder into his home to protect his daughter.

Amos Evans said his home has been broken into three times over the last two months.

Evans said his home was again broken into Tuesday morning while his 7-year-old daughter was taking a bath.

“I heard some glass break and I thought maybe she fell or hurt herself in the bathroom, so I ran in there and when I looked to my left I saw this guy who had busted the glass and was coming through my apartment,†Evans said.

"I asked him to stop, he didn't stop, I ran in my room got my gun, cocked it, and got off one shot,†he said.

Atlanta police say the intruder fled after being shot in the chest. He was later found near Daniel and Gartrell streets.

Investigators said the shooting was justified and Evans will not face charges.

"The key element is that you have to be placed in serious fear, or fear of serious injury of death, and if someone was not probably all the way in your house, that probably wouldn't apply,’ Atlanta Police Maj. Lane Hagin said.

The suspect is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital. Police say he will likely be charged with at least two counts of robbery.

"I still feel bad it happened, I don't take pleasure in shooting anyone, but I have to protect what's mine,†Evans said.

Why include an irrelevant quote like this? Why make an irrelevant statement like this?

Oh, yeah. We don't want everybody becoming vigilant... I mean, "vigilantes."

I agree ridiculous statement If someone is trying to come into my house while my little girl is there then there will be consequences

'not all the way in the house' . . . thats a can of worms to be opened

I am regularly amazed at how many times reports say ''he ran for his gun'' - or similar.

Heck - things go down pretty quick and I'd say it would be a luxury to have time to ''go fetch''........ that is why I encourage constant carry at all hours. Lot of good the piece does - that one time you need it, when it's in another darned room.

Coupla guys appeared this morning - saw them walk across porch. Opened door and almost surprised the one up front! The were in fact what they appeared - selling insurance. I politely thanked them but said ''I am not buying'' ... during which the rear guy (ya know - the sidekick who carries the 6" thick folder!!) noticed my piece. They did not linger.:)

This shoot appears well justified - but father was well fortunate to have had time to ''go fetch''.
 
Yeah, this kinda crap always amazes me. So, somebody breaks through the 3 locks on my front door, bent on destroying me. I shoot him and because of the screen door still being open because of his foot, he falls backward onto the front porch. Busted. "He wasn't all the way in your house." :rolleyes:

Obviously my ruined door frame and the fact that it was 2 am don't count.

OK, I'm reaching, but isn't that what everybody is inferring from this bozo?
 
You have to remember that Atlanta is not like anywhere else in Georgia. I grew up in Carrollton. I rural Georgia, the sheriff would say: "good job". Atlanta has a whole different political climate. Remember that they have had mayor like Andrew Young who was our ambassador to the UN. In the 1980s Atlanta was the murder capitol of the US because of the ineffective city government, the nepotism, corruption and stupidity that ran rampant. I doubt that this has changed in the 15 years since I left.
 
Bear - you make Atlanta sound like Chicago - Southern version!!

Is it only the huge cities that seem to have mayors and commitees devoted to disarming the lawful folks and all but encouraging criminal excesses? It often seems so.

I believe that Maj Hagin was describing why the shooting was justified. If ya'll wanna pick that statement apart, getting all worked up about a "grey area" of when you can or cannot shoot and how it inhibits your right to defend or who's to say when you felt treatened..blah blah blah....by all means, nothing wrong with high BP right? :rolleyes:

Point is, LE was supporting this case. That's good to hear.

As for Dad who had to run and get his gun, he was very fortunate things didn't turn bad.
 
It's good that l.e. is "supporting" the shooting. It's not o.k. that the major expressed an opinion that he's obviously not qualified to give. Whether or not somebody's "all the way in the house" has nothing to do with whether you can use deadly force.
 
As far as guns and gun control goes, Atlanta has been brought to heel concerning CCW and pre-emption laws by the GA legislature.

The latest and most interesting bill to be signed into law shields private clubs from lawsuits and punitive actions by municipalities who want to regulate internal membership matters within the clubs such as forcing them to recognize a person's homosexual partner and grant them membership priviledges the same as if the partner is the married "spouse" of the member. I don't know what the mayor and city council was thinking but Atlanta is not San Francisco even though it has one of the largest homosexual communities in the south.
