Man shoots alleged home invader twice

A 69-year-old man stopped two alleged home invaders when he met their rush into his southwest Atlanta home with shots from his handgun.

One of the alleged home invaders, a 16-year-old, was shot in the chest and arm.

Atlanta police Sgt. Kevin Iosty said a woman knocked on the door of Robert Evans' Ira Street home about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, asking for beer.

When Evans opened the door, two males rushed in, one armed with a shotgun, Iosty said.

Evans "retrieved his own handgun and shot one of the perpetrators twice, at which point both males and the female took off running, jumped in a black Saturn and fled," Iosty said.

Arriving officers broadcast a description of the Saturn, and other officers spotted the car on the Downtown Connector at Fulton Street.

Police stopped the car and found a 16-year-old male in the back seat with gunshot wounds. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. His condition was not available Wednesday afternoon.

Two women, ages 19 and 38, also were in the Saturn, which had been stolen.

The wounded youth and the women were charged with armed robbery and theft by receiving, Iosty said. Police declined to release the names of those arrested because one of the suspects remained on the run.

No charges have been filed against Evans, Iosty said.

You know, I may be desperate, but I don't think a strange woman knocking on my door asking for a beer will get me to open up.

even though he made a mistake by opening the door(he's 69, maybe his hearing is bad) for someone asking for beer, at least he was able to defend himself.

how do

all these near-septugenarians manage to dash back from HIRs to their gun vaults, retrieve a gun, and then shoot the bg several times?

I keep hearing these stories!

if two guys rushed INTO my house while i was standing at the door, my chances of actually stopping him would be quite slim... thats why i have security measures to keep people out. but how do these older gentlemen do such things? do they just pretend to be scared and docile until they bust out the hand cannon?

I really have no idea.

You don't have to be old. I've always done that.

Bad guys don't only view guns as tools to induce compliance. They also view weapons as instruments of self defense. I don't want them to have a reason to fear me until I am assured a high degree of success. Sure it's underhanded to mislead people but IMO evil deserves no fair chance to harm anyone.

I'm not 69, but I will be 58 next month, and have had several heart surgeries - I'm old and slow. I keep a revolver with me or close to hand at all times, even at home.
Also, there's the AK upstairs.....

Sounds like the kid had no intention of firing that shotgun. Just for intimidation.
I just do not understand how you can say that. Please tell me where it sounded or read like that? There is absolutely no information about his inetent wiith that shotgun other than he was armed with it when he burst into the man's residence with it. My guess is he had it and well would have used it had he thought it necessary but, he was beaten to the punch. The good thing was that even if it had een for intimidation alone, it did not work as he had planned.

All the best,
GB

silverlance: That's why most of us don't keep all of our personal weapons in the "gun vault". Real trouble doesn't give you a two-minute warning and there are no time-outs.

If you believe that even the most expensive and sophisticated system will give you and yours immunity from hostile intrusion, or even that it'll always buy you enough time to retrieve a weapon and make it ready, you're setting yourself up for a very rude awakening.

Hypotheticals aside, the major, if not only, reason that these "near-septuagenerians" survive these encounters is because they recognize that they are vulnerable, and have taken active measures to allow them to react to the threat of violence instantly and decisively.

They aren't looking for trouble, but they're savvy enough to see where trouble might come looking for them. Like yourself, they are painfully aware that their chances of successfully dealing with sudden, violent intrusion by physical prowess alone is "quite slim". Where they differ is in their willingness to recognize that it might well happen no matter what passive precautions they may take and prepare themselves to meet that "gravest extreme" with the best contravening force available to them.

Always. Because you never know when some Hyena might decide that you look like food. No matter how many motion sensors you have, nor CCV cameras, nor locks on your doors and bars on the windows. In the final analysis it is only your willingness and resolve to meet the threat of violence with instant contravening force of your own that can make the difference between "victim" and "victor".

Just remember dwhen you hear the statistic about x number of children killed or injured by guns then that boy is one that added to that number, and also when gang members attack the police that number is added to!!!!

Thank Sarah Brady

I keep a gun on me at all times, even at home. This eliminates the problems you list.

I try to keep my gun safe locked if only because I will forget to lock it when I leave if I don't. However, I always have one or two guns available that are not in plain view.

If someone was knocking on my door at 11 PM on a Tuesday night, you can bet I would have a gun in my hand. I don't think I would open up for a request for beer anyway (unless she was really good looking :D ). Then again, that may have been this man's problem also. :)

Good for him, he emerged victorious even when the odds were against him. His attackers were younger and greater in number, yet he still ran them off. That the police caught them is the icing on an already wonderful cake :D

I've been wondering the same thing for years - any BG with an ounce of sense is not gonna let you just go get your gun is he?
